Chemicals such as tear gas, chlorine, phosgene and mustard gas were used by the Germans to defeat their enemies. 
These war chemicals  created a new and complex public health threat that endangered  soldiers on the battle field and lots of civilians.
The Germans and Allied force used phosgene gas, which causes breathing difficulties and heart failure, also mustard gas that causes enemy's eye irritation and skin blistering.
