Topic 6 reflection: Protection of Indigenous culture by the Australian Government

Australia is the only country in the world that has a continent all to itself and also has many different races. Before 1788, there were only aborigines, about 500 tribes and 500 languages, but no detailed documentation had developed.

After that, Australia began to establish itself here in 1788, and by 1944 the population had plummeted to just over 70,000, after the Australian inhabitants had been gradually pushed into the central desert and semi-desert areas or enclosed in reservations and massacred or killed by infectious diseases.

The Australian Government had tried to exclude and then assimilate the indigenous peoples, but now, in response to appeals from the public and the international community, it had decided to grant autonomy to the indigenous peoples and had taken a number of measures to protect them. In 1972, for example, the Government established the Bilingual Education Project. To this day, many indigenous children learn their tribal language in school; the Government also subsidizes funds to provide assistance.

Meanwhile, indigenous heritage can be protected to varying degrees by state or territory heritage laws, as well as by other relevant Commonwealth laws, including the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBCA), which also safeguards Indigenous cultural heritage.

Reference list：

https://wenku.so.com/d/78082657e24e9da5ce383a21be33121a?src=ob_zz_juhe360wenku

Topic 3 reflection: IDENTITY: The things that come with identity

Identity is socially bestowed, socially sustained and sociallytransformed (Berger, 1973) I couldn't agree more with this statement. Although everyone is constantly striving for the social identity they tend to have, overall, our identity is somehow predetermined and assigned by society.

And people's identitiy don't stay the same. For as a person grows, his needs, and the needs of society for him, change with him. This also means that a person may have multiple identities, and a person's identity can be given by another person.

Take myself as an example, I was a middle school student in the past and I needed to study to get into high school. And middle school student was my identity at that time. When I get a job in the future, my identity will change to a practitioner of a certain job, and this is the responsibility that comes with identity. At the same time, I also have identities given to me by others. For example, my father's organization has a free gym, and I, as his son, a staff member relative, have unimpeded access to the gym, which is a convenience that comes with identity.

Identities are many and varied. At the same time, identity brings with it all kinds of things we want or don't want, depending on the society, the network of relationships, and ourselves.

Topic 4 reflection GENDER AND SEXUALITY ——Outdated stereotypes

I was very impressed with the video of this class "THROWING LIKE A GIRL" . The video asked the adult actors to throw a ball and run like a girl. All of the adult actors made very awkward, stereotypical movements. However, when the director asked the little girls to do it "like a girl", the little girls were able to do it with strength and energic. I was also struck by another video of a little boy crying while his family and elders were saying "don't cry like a girl! ".

In fact, this is revealing the reality that in today's society, people built-in impression of masculinity and femininity. For men, people believed that they should be strong, while women tend to should be soft. This results in women being more likely to be victimized in the public eye.

Devon Frye, for example, a doctor of psychology, noted that Men’s mental health stigma remains overlooked and ignored, and still lurks silently in the shadows of society. Because they as men are not usually taken seriously by places like hospitals, treatment facilities, etc. for mental health, resulting in their mental issues not being addressed. This is partly due to the common perception that men are strong and tough, which leads to the neglect of their vulnerable side.

Similarly, in other areas, such as marriage, men are subjected to many injustices simply because sometimes the image of women is more in line with what the public sees as a victim. Where I come from, due to women's protection laws and many other factors, when a couple divorces, the property is distributed more to the woman, even if a large portion of it was originally the man's property. Even when it comes to criminal cases, the woman is favored, resulting in unfair sentences for the man.

In fact, inherent images usually make the public more biased in favor of women, but it is undeniable that people often do not realize that very often men are victims as well.

Regerence list:

devon frye(2020)

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/talking-about-men/202011/mens-mental-health-stigma-mens-issue-or-social-issue

Topic 2 reflection: Disenchantment——From beautiful fantasy to rational reality

A long time ago, when human technology was not so advanced, people would explain some temporarily incomprehensible things or phenomena through various subjective fantasies.

As history progressed, especially during the rapid technological advances of mankind around the time of World War II, everything became more "RATIONALISATION." The social process in which traditional ideas and beliefs are replaced bymethodical rules and procedures and formal, ‘means-to-ends’ thinking. （from lesson document) .Similarly, WEBER'S 'IRON CAGE'. (It first appeared in Talcott Parsons ' 1930 translation of Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism) mentions what happens to people in such environments such as dehumanising.

dehumanizing can be in many senses. To take an example from my own experience, when I was a small child, holiday vacations were very nice things. I would go out and play with my buddies and set off firecrackers on certain holidays like New Year's Eve. However, when I grew up a bit, my school load became much heavier. As a result, I had less mood and time to celebrate holidays. In the old days New Year was a great thing to get rest and go to relatives' houses. But now I spend my vacation time thinking about all the work I have to do afterward, and the kind of aimless fun I used to have is basically gone. The atmosphere of the holiday has also become thin, and the corresponding things of the holiday have not been touched for a long time. For example, I used to go to the graves of my ancestors on Qingming Festival, a holiday to pay respect to the deceased relatives, but when I was older, I usually spent my time on various projects and I haven't gone to pay respect to my ancestors for several years now. This means that I have stifled many of my former, more individualized behaviors in order to gain a higher level of effectiveness in learning and a variety of other areas.

Reference list::

https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=AoxzKbBi&id=957F5D2FA9273FF3FFA24CF74BD58C1B0B1D64A6&thid=OIP.AoxzKbBiBcFp_ULSRxis2gHaJQ&mediaurl=https%3a%2f%2fi.pinimg.com%2foriginals%2f28%2f8d%2f28%2f288d280ae9e74cfca467aa19189ac3f4.jpg&cdnurl=https%3a%2f%2fth.bing.com%2fth%2fid%2fR.028c7329b06205c169fd42d24718acda%3frik%3dpmQdCxuM1Uv3TA%26pid%3dImgRaw%26r%3d0&exph=1125&expw=900&q=WEBER%e2%80%99S+%e2%80%98IRON+CAGE&simid=607988789410952370&FORM=IRPRST&ck=582998F88A6E056E8F9B133B0B0A161D&selectedIndex=3&itb=0&ajaxhist=0&ajaxserp=0 (image source）

Topic 7 Reflection: Thoughts on my own future in old age

This class is about Life Course. I have deep feelings about one of the older age. I think of my grandparents, they are now approaching 80 years old. They have four children, including my mother. And they are currently living quite well, not being institutionalized, and not suffering from any particularly serious health problems. They currently own their own house and live in a very nice environment.

Their old age isn't bad, but I can't help but think will I be as settled as they are when I become an older person?

This is unimaginable to me now. According to "Giddens 3 Clocks" , I would be degraded or marginalized in many ways. First of all, physically, it means that I would no longer be able to walk home from the supermarket with a heavy backpack like I do now. In more serious cases, I might even have hearing or visual impairment, which would make my life very difficult. The second is the decline in my cognitive abilities. Even now, I need to do rundowns, and get help, to get certificates and procedures from some authorities. When I get older, my slow brain will make this even more difficult.

This means I need to have children or late bloomers to look after. However, with the fertility rate getting lower and lower now, I'm not even sure if I'll ever get married and if I'll be able to raise a child properly if I have one. Throughout my own childhood, I have experienced a lot, and at the same time I know exactly in which part of my upbringing I was flawed. For example, having been influenced by my mother's short temper, I think there's a part of my impatience in my personality that affects me as well.

In addition, the reason my grandparents have a stable life now is because they had a very hard time when they were young, and they got where they are today after struggling for decades and having four mature children to look after them. And I'm so confused about my future that I'm even wondering if I'll be forced to go to a nursing home and be abused by the caregivers if I end up alone without children. I am now in early adulthood and I need to be at a stage where I am becoming independent, looking for a job and being prepared to take care of my aging parents. It's all confusing for me, and I have to lay the groundwork at this stage in order to prepare for the future as a way of making sure my old age isn't too miserable.
