This lead me to do more reading on the topic. There is tracking on browsers, apps, and emails. Not only does Google and Facebook use it, but according to a study by Ghostery 79% of the websites in the world also uses some form of tracking. Goggle and Facebook earns the majority of their revenue through advertisement generated from collecting our data through tracking. The obvious drawback is our personally identifying information getting into the wrong hands. One of the benefits of tracking is lowering the cost of products. Tracking helps companies to more effectively market their products. This lowers their cost and the savings are past on to us when we purchase the product.

]]> 2020-05-16 06:27:48 UTC https://padlet.com/jondajordan/Bookmarks/wish/576365077 Assignment 3: Virtual Reality jondajordan https://padlet.com/jondajordan/Bookmarks/wish/583935975 I think virtual reality is a science teacher’s wish come true.  With budget cuts, science labs and lab equipment are becoming scarce.  Additionally, science teachers don’t have the time to do a lot of actual hands-on lab.  They are preparing students for standardized testing and many teach more than one science subject.  I believe students need to see the different layers of how things work in order to understand how the world works.  For example, they must understand how the heart works and how the circulatory system maintains the body.  Then, students can fully understand what a heart attack is or how obesity affects the body.  I am a supporter of VR labs.  There are so many amazing things that can be done to help teach science.  With the use of VR headsets, a class of students can ride on the back of red blood cells and travel through their veins.  I know that I would teach anatomy and physiology if I could use VR labs.  These labs have become controversial by religious and animal rights groups.  Also, students and parents object to the idea of touching a dead animal or their child touching it.  Personally, it’s too messy and can become unsanitary (with storage and disposable).  However, with using virtual reality A&P labs could be safe, simple, and educational.

I was surprised that this app contains real police and court records of crimes.   I was happy to know that there were no crimes reported within a 1 mile radius of me. When a crime does occur, the app gives you the type of crime, location, date, time, description, and referral source for the data.  Although, my neighborhood appears safe using this app, it made me think about how accurate this information is.  What about all the crimes that were never reported, especially domestic violence and rape.  Then I noticed, there is no symbol in the legend for sexual assault or domestic violence (only assault).  I live in walking distance of an elementary school, but this app cannot tell me if child abuse has been reported in my area.  I know that this is probably a privacy issue to protect the victim, but how can you help the victims or prevent these crimes if they remain invisible.

]]> 2020-05-22 12:49:03 UTC https://padlet.com/jondajordan/Bookmarks/wish/588881057 Assignment 5: BOOK CREATOR, A New Resource to My Classroom. jondajordan https://padlet.com/jondajordan/Bookmarks/wish/598161753 Even though, I am a math and science person, I see the importance of writing and how it connects to every subject.  This is why I love Book Creator.  This resource adds writing and creativity in the classroom.  It can be used as a resource by both teachers and students.  No matter if I was teaching virtual or in the classroom, I would use Book Creator to create a lesson on a mathematical topic.  I would add audio and notes in order to show students how to do a problem step by step.  This would give students the opportunity to watch and learn over and over until they mastered the concept.  This would also be a good tool to use for test review.  One of the advantages of using Book Creator is that you can use multiple platforms.  You can add audio, video, drawing and website links to your book.  Another advantage is that you can share your finished product.  People from your class, school, or from around the world can view the book you have created.  Book Creator is an excellent educational tool because as students build their books, they are learning the content that they are creating.  And they are learning on a higher level than just memorizing.  The last advantage that Book Creator personally gives me is the fact that it can be used across all grade levels and subjects.

The advantages of using AI are elimination of human error, prevention of human risk (it can defuse a bomb without risking the safety of a police officer), unlimited availability, faster decision making, and ability to do repetitive jobs. Another amazing thing that AI can do is assist human with creating new inventions especially in medicine. AI has been created to detect the specific site of pneumonia in a patient and detect breast cancer at the earliest stage.  Now, scientists are using AI to help them to create new AI.  Soon, we will have AI monitoring drug interactions, evaluating surgical procedures, and diagnosing diseases.  
There are several disadvantages of AI.  First, there is an extremely high cost to create this technology and then the high cost continues with maintenance and repair.  Next, AI can contribute to unemployment.  Humans can be replaced by AI to do all the simple and repetitive task at a company or factory.  Finally, AI do not have any emotions.  In a classroom, this technology cannot bond with students, feel empathy, or make an emotional connection.  
]]> 2020-05-28 17:43:12 UTC https://padlet.com/jondajordan/Bookmarks/wish/599710684 Assignment 7: BCI & Neuralink https://padlet.com/jondajordan/Bookmarks/wish/605641644 The idea that an ultra-thin Neuralink thread can change the lives of paralyzed individuals is amazing.  A device can be implanted into a paralyzed person and allow them to control smart devices such as an iPhone or computer to assist with their everyday tasks.  I was very impressed that the Neuralink threads that are implanted in the brain were thinner than a strand of human hair. The surgery can be performed similar to outpatient surgery.  Implantation doesn’t require anesthesia or a physician.  Everything is done by a robot.  The operation from prep to post surgery would probably take less than an hour.
In learning about BCI, it reminds me of the cyborgs on Syfy shows such as Star Trek. It is mind blowing the benefits BCI can have in healthcare, but it is also scary.  At what point do we lose our humanity or lose touch with reality.  Its problematic because BCI technology will have a huge control over our lives. AI (robots) perform the operations, an electronic device is attached to your brain, and “your thoughts are uploaded and downloaded into another electronic device.  Technology now has control of both your body and your mind.  
 
]]> 2020-06-01 20:41:39 UTC https://padlet.com/jondajordan/Bookmarks/wish/605641644 Assignment 8: Coding & Robotics jondajordan https://padlet.com/jondajordan/Bookmarks/wish/607226508 ln every school and classroom, there are students with special needs.  And their needs can be a wide range of physical, mental, emotional, cognitive or health impairments.   However, as teachers we must meet their accommodations of their IEP and aid in bridging the gap in learning caused by their impairment.  Research shows that students with special needs can benefit from coding and interacting with the robots.  They may have barriers to communicating with others by speaking or writing, but they can communicate through their robots.  They can program their robot to express and explain the concepts they have learned.   As educators, we know students learn differently and at different rates, but coding can be a good “equalizer.”  Coding and robotics can support special needs students in a variety of ways. These innovations allow them to be more independent and organized, but also supports inclusion. Coding and robotics can help special needs students with speaking, reading, and writing challenges.  They can also help special needs students control their emotions, articulate their feelings, and adjust in social situations.  Coding and robotics also have the major advantage of giving students immediate and correct feedback.
