Question 4 - How to manage an unprepared/ not fully prepared group

I bet you know this awkward feeling when your class is there to help students practise what they are supposed to know (i.e. have prapared beforehand), but some of them turn up unprepared. For example, they had to watch a video and learn words on Quizlet, or prepare questions, or read and be ready to retell an article. How to help those who are ready to move on and not to get stuck on a recognition/drilling phase, and at the same time, how to not only engage those who are not ready, so that they don't lag behind as the course continues?

It sometimes happens to me and I don't like it when it does that Ss complete my final speaking activity within 2-3 minutes when at least 10-15 were planned. First, I have to think of ways to extend the lesson. Second, I get a feeling there was no thorough practice of the target language. I also feel Ss leave the class with a feeling that they only filled in some gaps and never got round to some real speaking. What should I do? :)
