Orwell used the word totalitarianism to describe a kind of government that controls everything in people’s lives. For him, it meant not just controlling laws but also controlling what people think and say. Today, people see totalitarianism as something very bad and dangerous. It takes away freedom and doesn’t let people say or think what they want.

If individuals remember the real past, they can question propaganda and lies. memory must be controlled for absolute power to endure.

Just like the Party rewrites history in 1984, government, media, and corporations today shape collective memory by controlling the flow of information. When news is filtered, facts are distorted, or inconvenient truths are buried, public memory is altered.

In 1984 by George Orwell, manipulation is a very important theme. Orwell shows how the government controls people by changing language, history, and even their thoughts. The Party uses lies, propaganda, and fear to stay in power and to control what people believe.

Today, manipulation still happens. It can be seen in the news, politics, and social media. Sometimes, false information is shared on purpose. News feeds are changed by algorithms to show people only what they already agree with. Powerful groups can control stories to make people think a certain way. Orwell warned us about this, and we can see it today in fake news, spying, and the loss of truth in politics.
