The Original Portrait was painted by Basil and was an exact image of Dorian. This image displayed Dorian's vibrant youth and purity that it held. Dorian and Lord Henry go outside in the garden and discuss Dorian's beauty and youth and says how they will not last forever and will fade rather quickly. When Dorian goes back inside he curses his portrait because its beauty and purity will last forever while his actual body will grow old and change. Dorian makes the comment, "If it was only the other way! If it was I who were to be always young, and the picture that were to grow old! For this—for this—I would give everything!" (Page 19). This quote from Dorian foreshadows the rest as the novel as Dorian continues to place such high importance on youth and beauty.

Dorian falls in love with Sibyl Vane and spends a great deal of time with her. After she has a horrific stage performance Dorian realizes that he never was truly in love with her, but with her acting. Dorian tells Sibyl that he never wants to see her again. When Dorian returns home from a long night of walking the streets, he notices that the portrait Basil has painted has changed. The portrait now had a sneer at the corner of his mouth. This was a result of the actions that Dorian had taken in the life of Sibyl Vane, which inevitably lead to her suicide. Dorian then realized that his wish for the portrait to bear his physical deterioration had come true and that he would now stay young and beautiful forever. With this new information Dorian can decides he can live free from worry and decides to dedicate his life to Lord Henry's words, "The highest of all duties, the duty that one owes to one’s self" (Page 14). Dorian is visited by Basil the next morning who gives him his condolences for the death of his beloved. Dorian responds by saying, "What is done is done. What is past is past" (Page 69). This shows the new character that Dorian is that will lead a life of destruction that will change his portrait for the worse.

The actions that were taken at with the death of Sibyl Vane were just the beginning of Dorian's life of corruption and care of only himself as he vows to live a life of, "eternal youth, infinite passion, pleasures subtle and secret, wild joy and wilder sin" (Page 67). Dorian's picture begins to deteriorate more and more as time passes and he grows older. The portrait is bearing the blunt of all of the terrific changes that are happening to Dorian's soul.

After the incident with James Vane, Dorian attempts to cleanse his soul. He meets with Lord Henry and tells him the he wants to change and become virtuous. Lord Henry tells him that this is nonsense and it is much too late for that. Basil tells Lord Henry about an opportunity he had to seduce an innocent inn keeper's daughter. Dorian was hoping that this good act would change his soul, so he decides to look at the painting. Dorian is angered when he finds that the portrait has not changed much at all except that the corner of the mouth seems to have a small wrinkle of a hypocrite that seems to be making him. This angers Dorian who grabs the knife that he kills Basil with and stabs the portrait in an attempt to destroy it. Dorian turns into the man in the portrait and the portrait returns to its original glory as it was when Basil first painted it.
