The best kind of feedback from formative assessments is descriptive feedback. Stepping back from the lesson and identifying the learning goals, where the students are in relation to the learning goal and what are you going to do to close the gap between where the students are and how to achieve the learning goal.
The best formative assessment includes descriptive feedback. This can provide opportunities to positively reinforce behaviors related to effort which can help students across subject areas. Descriptive feedback can also help to convey expectations and progress towards goals and objectives.

Formative assessments allow students to gain positive feedback that will allow them to know they are doing a good job or allow them to understand what they can change in order to make something better. Grades are not always necessary and could be harmful to some students' drive to want to complete work. Lindi H.

Formative Assessment Take Aways

- Kids can learn without grades! Descriptive feedback is so much more important than a number or letter written at the top. I wish society would recognize this - it is so sad that our little friends are already always asking their teacher "Is that an A?" when they should be asking themselves "did I do my best work?" and "how can I make it better?"

-Most of the time is spent developing summative assessments, when the greater value really comes from formative assessments and the feedback provided by those assessments.

-formative assessment should be ongoing - interesting that as a CSI team we identified "uses assessment to inform instruction" as a weaker point of evaluations in our school after looking at data from last year. It should always be occurring and used to shape our instructional decisions during and after lessons.
T. Smith

Feedback is the most important. If there is no feedback there is no instructional value. Without feedback students do not learn as well. Tracie S.

Bottom line: Everything can be a type of formative assessment. Students should be given the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and grow in their learning on a daily basis. Mistakes are the basis of how we learn and grow as contributing members of society. They should be given time to make corrections and teachers should be using all assessment data (formative or not) to aide in their instruction. Katie M.
