- we talked about how the various people they encountered on the trip, and how poor many of them were.
- for example, in la paz, there were tons of poor boys who would do anything for a bit of money.
- we then talked about their experiences with sea life, and how they have had varying levels of success in capturing sea life and taking it back depending on the species.
- we also talked about the huge differences in wealth, with people on the yachts being at the top, and foreigners second with the natives being the poorest.

These coast pilots are constantly exasperated; they are not happy men. When anything happens they are blamed, and their writing takes on an austere tone because of it. No matter how hard they work, the restlessness of nature and the carelessness of man are always two jumps ahead of them. Pg 89.
If the coast pilot authors so hate writing the coast pilot, why did they continue to write it if they knew their work would be invalidated soon?

1. As a group we are all able to read the designated amount in the time required and still be able to hold the knowledge needed for our book club.
2. The book is excessive and from philosophical bounds. It gives detailed descriptions and goes off topic when the narrator turns the story into philosophy we all came to realize.
3. As a group we can improve our discussion by talking more by giving details, events, and quotes that we liked and by changing our mindset to be more open and positive while reading.

- It was interesting how the shark took 17 hrs to die

-A quote we came across showed that the expedition was more than just the crew looking for new species, but also the chance to step away from the insane world they live in. Any worries they once had, no longer have an affect on them now.

- we didn’t love the book, because we found it difficult to read and didn’t enjoy reading it. we also didn’t like his philosophical tangents that he went on throughout the book.

The clubs success: The clubs overall success throughout the course of the past few weeks has been remarkable with all of us keeping up with each other relatively in the amount of pages read and information gathered. We all find the same events interesting and the boring not so important events dragging throughout our read.
Possible themes: The Delicacy of nature and stepping away from the world we live in and looking around for a whiles time.
Possible creative projects: Some form of illustration as an art piece.

- we talked about the boat, and how it may work or not work for the crew, like the sea cow engine
- We also discussed the supplies brought that were needed to have a successful 6 week expedition.

The crew brought a lot of supplies for the 6 week journey. this included food, scientific equipment, and chemicals for preservation. will this be enough or will they need more?

Many different types of food that could last 7 men for 6 weeks. This included canned milk, spaghetti, cases of peaches and pineapple, rice, jam, beans, etc. They also brought a typewriter and camera equipment. A fifteen-gallon barrel of U.S.P. Formaldehyde and a fifteen-gallon barrel of denatured alcohol.

Now that the crew have set sail, what will happen during this trip? Will they complete the goals they have set out to do, or will they encounter trouble and have to turn back early?

Thoughts about the crew involved. They are a very diverse group of people and it is interesting to see how they will interact with each other.

Tex - He is the mechanic and very good with diesel engines. “It is said that when a burned bearing or a cracked shaft gives him sharp pains in in stomach” (pg 17)

Tony - he is the master and part owner of the Western Flyer. He is quite, and would only speak if he knew what he was saying was true/right. (loves the truth, and hates things that are false)

1. We divided the work and completed it he work in an organized and thorough.
2. We wish we read more so we had more content to cover.
3. We all agreed that the first section of the book we read was very manatinus and mundane as it only went over people and an extensive list of supply’s in the book
