  • Johnson was born Malcome Micheals Jr. and she graduated high school and moved to  New York City to express her “ Marsha” and her feminine side.

    • She worked as a sex worker and drag queen that performed with the Hot Peaches theater company. 

    • Johnson was present during the June 28th 1969 Stonewall Raid and the riots and protests that followed. 


    • Johnson helped the Gay Liberation Front in 1970 and initiated STAR as an attempt to help to provide hospitality and protection for homeless transgender women. 

    • She was also a participant in AIDS, also known as ACT UP. She held protest signs stating, “ Power To The People” to advocate for her people.

  • Johnson’s hard work paid off; in 2017 the NYPD finally gave an apology for the Stonewall Raid that happened in 1969. 

    • In May the city of New York created a memorial to honor the history and legacy of the transgender activist Marsha P Johnson. They also said that this was this city’s first permanent monument in the world honoring transgender people. 

    • Johnson is one of the reasons why we are able to celebrate pride for the LGBTQ+ community in June all over the world today.

  • Marsha P Johnson was very kindhearted, she helped Transgender women( particularly women of color)  live in a safe environment after needing shelter. 

    • Johnson was very brave, she wasn’t ashamed of who she became and she was very passionate to help others like her. 

    • Johnson was also hard working, after the Stonewall raid she became an outspoken activist and protector for the people who found themself homeless because of their gender nonconformity. 

    • Johnson was also very selfless, she battled homelessness and discrimination but still her main focus was to help her people.

  • Johnson inspired many members of the LGBTQ+ across the world to be confident in who they are and not to be ashamed and to love themselves regardless of who they love or what they believe in. 

    • Johnson’s impact and appearance in the Stonewall riot actually inspired the modern gay rights movement. It’s also the reason we celebrate Pride in the month of June today.

  • A connection to an issue today would be how discrimination towards members of the LGBTQ+ still happens to this day. This has been going on for a longggg time, since before the 1960’s. In the article, “50 years after Stonewall: New York City's transgender community feels left behind.” It talks about how 58 percent of transgender  people have been harassed by police since 2015. It also talks about how 36 transgender women have been KILLED violently across the United States and most of them were women of color. That is not right, I want to raise awareness, we are all human and we shouldn’t be judged based off of who we love or who we believe we are as a person.
