TROJAN RECORDS
RUDEBOY tells the story of Trojan Records by placing it at the heart of a cultural revolution that unfolded in the council estates and shanty towns of the late 60’s and 70’s. The film begins in the 1950’s, as Jamaica is slowly transitioning to its eventual independence in 1962. We meet Duke Reid and his legendary Trojan sound system and explore the social and cultural conditions that give rise to the birth of the rude boy, the emergence of sound-system culture and the rise of the distinctive Jamaican sound ska

Frontwoman of the Selecter, a politicized two-tone ska revival band formed in the late ’70 that is still making people dance, is no stranger to fashion. She famously played with androgyny by adapting the tailored, mod-ish Rude Boy style to her own stylish purposes while performing music that was a pointed response to Thatcherism in ’80s Britain. It’s safe to say that pussy-cat bows and big handbags have never been her thing—nor frocks for that matter.

In 1976, however, racial tensions were running high, due largely in part to the police’s ‘stop and search’ policy. Three thousand police officers – 10 times the usual number – were assigned to the Notting Hill Carnival.

According to police reports, on August 30, the last day of the festivities, officers attempted to arrest a pickpocket near Portobello Road. A number of carnival-goers – both black and white – came to the pickpocket’s aid and within minutes, this incident escalated into violence. Other witnesses later said that the presence of white fascist gangs had also contributed to the riot.

The police made 66 arrests – and in a subsequent trial, which cost a record £250,000, 17 black youths were charged.
