This song is an example of a sad or hopeless tone. The writer of the song is talking about losing hope in someone and messing up. Listening to this, the audience is supposed to feel sad and desperate. They use this to either make something relate-able if the audience is going through a tough time or to kind of give the audience a way of seeing in the writer's life.

The bird sang a jubilant tune into the cool, sleeping night.
This is an example of personification because obviously we know birds can't literally sing and the night can't literally sleep. These actions are things that humans can do, applied to non-human things. This device can be used to give character to items or to create a better picture in the reader's head of what is going on. It may also help them make connections because they are all pretty familiar with these human traits and how they look and feel.

In this song there is a ton of references within the lyrics. First, the song title is a reference to the Bible as Shadrach was a biblical figure caught within a fiery furnace. A reason why they included this in the song was to add an reference point so the listener could think and relate it back to the song. Most musicians do this as to help their songs sell if they have a connection within it.

This is an example of a metaphor because of the way that it is comparing a heart to gold which are two completely unrelated things. It doesn't use like or as so it is not a simile. This is used as a way to say the girl is nice or pure. By comparing her heart to gold, a valuable, beautiful metal, you are saying she is very good. It may be a more descriptive way to describe something without bluntly saying it in a boring way. It catches attention and opens imagination.
