The First Wide Body Jetliner (1970)

The people who made the 747 were called the Incredibles. At the time it was the biggest commercial jet ever constructed. The first airline to use the mighty 747 was Pan American Airways. Pan Am operated flights from the USA internationally using the 747. They where able to fly further and faster for cheaper with more passengers. This was a huge benefit to British Airline companies. A flaw to the 747 was that planes before it were much smaller meaning airports only had to accommodate those smaller planes. So when the demand for the 747 increased Airports had to evolve quickly to be able to house the large 747. This cost the Airports millions but it was worth it as the 747-100 was one of the most popular planes of that time racking in millions in profit. The 747 truly revolutionised air travel and set trends for the future when it came to the further development of other wide body jet liners.

As time continues airliners will become more efficient and easier to use. In the future planes may run on a hydrogen fuel cell system and be fully automatic not needing any pilot intervention. In the future planes also might get faster for example the Boom company are designing a new supersonic aircraft that follows in the foot steps of Concorde.

First High Speed Train Network (1975)

France in the 70s wanted a rail network that connected French Cities and Towns, since then the Train a Grande Vitesse network has been expanded to link different countries for example the UK. This was a huge benefit to the general public as people could cross the channel and cross France in half the time it would usually take. Train a Grande Vitesse has generated billions for the UK government and train companies (HS1,HS2) and many other governments around Europe.

A few negatives to the TGV lines is that they produce lots of noise and vibration which is a hindrance to people who live and work near the line. This has caused many protests which has decreased the popularity of the line.

In the future trains will become faster and more efficient. Diesel and steam trains will be eventually fully phased out for more environmentally friendly electrically driven ones.

Transport Act (1985)

In 1984, the white paper Buses and more detailed consultation papers proposed deregulate local bus services. Part I of the Act put these proposals into action.
On October 26, 1986, privatisation and bus deregulation went into effect. Municipalities were required to separate their municipally owned bus services into separate companies. With the exception of Lothian Buses in Edinburgh, most of these companies have since been privatised; however, a few other municipal bus companies still exist today. The Act also required local governments to publish statements of their own policies for non-commercial bus services deemed socially vital.

Deregulation of Air Travel (1987)

Before this, a UK airline was only permitted to fly to and from the UK and was not permitted to establish an airport base anywhere else in the EU. The deregulation of EU air travel started in 1987. This allowed EU airlines to establish themselves in any region of Europe, giving them the opportunity to have bases all over the world. As a result, low-cost airlines were able to flourish since they could fly anywhere in the world and make stops at their bases. Positives to this where the creation of low cost airlines such as Easyjet and Ryanair. Negatives where that some airlines went bankrupt due to the rise of low cost airlines.

The Internet (1993)

The release of the internet changed everything. It meant we could communicate our thoughts across effectively and efficiently. The positives of the internet in travel were the ability to now book tickets and holidays online as well as getting information such as flight times and other useful help. A negative was people were beginning to get less reliant on travel agents as it was much easier to book directly. Many UK retail travel agents have shut down over the years due to the internet.
In the future the internet is only projected to get more advanced with AI technology and virtual reality. There are already virtual tours of hotels and venues, this technology can be improved a lot in the future.

The channel tunnel allows trains to go directly underneath the sea to get from france to the UK (HS1) and visa versa. A huge positive to the Eurotunnel is that it is highly profitable, in 2014 it made £84.6million. The Eurotunnel transports millions of UK tourists per year and links the UK to Europe as whole. A negative to the channel tunnel was the 11 deaths it caused while being in construction.

The A380 (October 2007)

The A380 was and still is the largest commercial jet airliner to be created. It can carry up to 840 passengers in an all economy state. A positive of this plane is the value of it. Airlines can carry many more passengers then normal. If an Airline operated 2 routes a day to a certain destination, using the A380 they could slim that down to one ultimately lowering operating costs and benefiting the Airline as a whole. A negative to this plane is its sheer size as many UK airports can not facilitate it only a select few can.

Self check in in UK airports has drastically lowered check in times. Self Check in has made UK airports much less stressful and faster to navigate which is a huge positive. A negative to Self Check in is that there is less need for people to be manning the check in desks which reduces jobs.

COVID 19 destroyed the Travel industry. In the second Quarter of 2020 the UK saw a percentage decrease of 96% of inbound travel. Many companies where dissolved such as Flybe etc and many employees where let go. This is obviously a huge negative. Hundreds of thousands of flights and holidays where cancelled and a lot of stress was put onto companies to stay afloat during quarantine. As COVID restrictions started to lift many people saw the chance to travel again but due to harsh restrictions in other countries there was a record high in domestic tourism which is a positive to the UK industry.

2022 started off with the Russian invasion on Ukraine. This meant many countries such as the UK put harsh restrictions on Russia, this in turn had a negative effect on the UK as lots of resources we use come from Russia and Ukraine. This has meant the UK has had to source goods from other countries which has increased the overall cost of perishables in the UK. This impacts the travel industry greatly as many people can no longer afford to travel due to fuel prices and prices of basic essentials going up.
