School-Based Mentoring Program

Compeer Buffalo operates four core programs, each focusing on friendship and supportive relationships to encourage mental wellness. These include 1-to-1 volunteer mentoring, group social activities, school-based mentoring, and Mental Health Education (including the evidence-based curriculum for Mental Health First Aid). Volunteers become positive role models, help raise self-esteem, increase social and communication skills, and encourage independence for their Compeer friends. The relationship between volunteers and their friends encourages a sense of belonging, trust, respect, hope, support, and empowerment.

| School Based Mentor
Overview
| Gain direct service experience in a non-clinical setting. Work with a group of middle or high school students living with (or at risk for) mental illness throughout the academic year. Responsibilities will also include presenting to the greater student body on various mental health topics. Hours completed in a school setting utilizing the Positive Action curriculum. Both 1-to-1 and group interactions will occur. Requires an interview and screening process including background checks and orientation. Interns placed in this role will participate in training specifically around delivering the Positive Action curriculum. School Based mentors will be placed at one school location. We are currently working with Maryvale (Cheektowaga), Lake Shore (Angola), KenTon (Kenmore/Tonawanda) and Cheektowaga-Sloan (Cheektowaga), Alden (Alden).

SOT provides holistic and integrated services to survivors of torture and trauma, primarily asylum-seekers, asylees, refugees, in four core areas: legal, mental health, medical, and social. Services assist survivors and their families through the process of healing and recovery.

TST-R is a tiered approach to mental health services for youth that includes (1) outreach and education about stigma and mental health (2) skills-based groups in schools and other community organizations (3) emotion-regulation focused treatment and beyond trauma therapy, and (4) safety-focused treatment.

PSS provides cultural-specific group and individual supportive counseling to adults and their families, mental health screenings, mental health first aid to staff and other service providers, and community education and outreach.

RICH clinical services provide individual counseling to adults enrolled in any of the RICH programs. Each program uses the support of cultural brokers, or liaisons from the various refugee and immigrant communities, to provide linguistic and cultural support throughout all of the services to bridge the gap between providers and individuals/families seeking services.

We’re focused on supporting early career therapists and interns and are accepting second-year graduate students for field placement in Fall 2023. You will provide individual therapy to adults via videoconferencing and maintain a caseload of ~10 or so clients.
