"He thought of the telescreen with its never-sleeping ear.
They could spy upon you night and day, but if you kept your
head you could still outwit them. With all their cleverness
they had never mastered the secret of finding out what another
human being was thinking. Perhaps that was less true
when you were actually in their hands. One did not know
what happened inside the Ministry of Love, but it was possible
to guess: tortures, drugs, delicate instruments that
registered your nervous reactions, gradual wearing-down
by sleeplessness and solitude and persistent questioning."

The Veil: The idea of love

Type of Satire (Tone): Juvenalian: The tone of this passage is very militaristic, which is evident from how Winston speaks with a cold voice, as if he were repeating military instructions. This passage is satirical because of the associations of the Ministry of Love. What someone would think of when hearing of the anything of love, is in sharp contrast to what kind of ideas Ministry of Love actually recalls, "tortures, drugs, delicate instruments that
registered your nervous reactions, gradual wearing-down
by sleeplessness and solitude and persistent questioning." I think that the newspeak word for it, "miniluv," is another great example of the irony of the ministry, as it could be taken to be a shorthand for 'minimum love,' which is a much more accurate description of the Ministry of Love.

Tools of Satire used: Situational Irony, Juxtaposition: By associating the Ministry of Love with things like "tortures, drugs, delicate instruments that
registered your nervous reactions, gradual wearing-down
by sleeplessness and solitude and persistent questioning" the reader is thrown for a loop because those concepts are the opposite of what a reader would say they associate the idea of love with.

The Target: The target of this passage is any society that thinly veils anything that is unethical or promotes inequality by proclaiming it is "for the good of the people." Stalin's USSR is an example of this inequality in the name of equality.

"The new tune which was to be the theme song of Hate Week (The "Hate Song," it was called) had already been composed and was being endlessly plugged on the telescreens. It had a savage, barking rhythm which could not exactly be called music but, resembled the beating of a drum. Roared out by hundreds of voices to the tramp of marching feet, it was terrifying. The proles had taken a fancy to it, and in the midnight streets it competed with the still-popular ‘It was only a hopeless fancy’. The Parsons children played it at all hours of the night and day, unbearably, on a comb and a piece of toilet paper. Winston’s evenings were fuller than ever. Squads of volunteers, organized by Parsons, were preparing the street for Hate Week, stitching banners, painting posters, erecting flagstaffs on the roofs, and perilously slinging wires across the street for the reception of streamers."

The Veil: Description of Hate Week

Type of Satire: Juvenalian: The passage has an aggravating yet exciting tone. The “Hate Song” causes agitation in the people and brings out feelings of hatred towards the enemies of the state. The words, “hate,” “savage,” and “barking” ansite fear and hatred at the same time. Additionally, the words, “music,” “banners,” and “streamers” enstil the feeling of celebration and excitement. Normally people would not be gathering to celebrate expelling their hatred toward a group of people.

Tools of Satire: Reversal, Juxtaposition: Orwell uses a celebration to portray hatred. Normally celebrations are used to honor or praize a moment or person. Instead the celebration is used to arouse anger. This can be seen in the description of time leading up to Hate Week where, "The new tune which was to be the theme song of Hate Week (The "Hate Song," it was called) had already been composed and was being endlessly plugged on the telescreens." Additionally, cellabration is being juxtaposed with condemnation. These people are gathering together in joy to expel their hatred.

The Target: The target is the propaganda of Stalin’s Russia. Additionally, it is Stalin’s utilization of reversing situations to fit the ideology of the state. The people are celebrating their hatred toward the enemies of the state. Stalin may have never set aside a week for the people to express their spite toward the enemies of the state but he certainly encouraged rage through propaganda that dehumanized enemies.

"In one combination or another, these three super-states are permanently at war, and have been so for the past twenty-five years. War, however, is no longer the desperate, annihilating struggle that it was in the early decades of the twentieth century. It is a warfare of limited aims between combatants who are unable to destroy one another, have no material cause for fighting and are not divided by any genuine ideological difference. This is not to say that either the conduct of war, or the prevailing attitude towards it, has become less bloodthirsty or more chivalrous. On the contrary, war hysteria is continuous and universal in all countries, and such acts as raping, looting, the slaughter of children, the reduction of whole populations to slavery, and reprisals against prisoners which extend even to boiling and burying alive, are looked upon as normal, and, when they are committed by one's own side and not by the enemy, meritorious."

The Veil: War and its spoils

Type of Satire (Tone): Juvenalian: This passage reveals the true meaning behind war (or at least the war between Ocean and Eastasia/Eurasia) and it shows the hypocrisy that the citizens of the superstates have when viewing the war and their opponents. All three superstates are essentially the same, but they stay at war (even though none of them can ever really win) because they use war as a means of oppressing the members of their states. For the people, the war is less than worthless. For the inner party, the war is what keeps them in their place on top.

Tools of Satire used: Situational Irony, Reversal: One would think that the war would mean that all of the superstates want to destroy each other, but that would actually go against their wishes. The superstates need each other as a means of consuming their resources to keep things in "shortages" and to keep the lower party members oppressed. Winning the war is the opposite of what the inner party wants, and yet they rally their people to have the moral to fight and want to win the war.

The Target: The target of this passage are power hungry leaders and war mongers.

"O’Brien took the decanter by the neck and filled up the glasses with a dark-red liquid. It aroused in Winston dim memories of something seen long ago on a wall or a hoarding—a vast bottle composed of electric lights which seemed to move up and down and pour its contents into a glass. Seen from the top the stuff looked almost black, but in the decanter it gleamed like a ruby. It had a sour-sweet smell. He saw Julia pick up her glass and sniff at it with frank curiosity. ‘It is called wine,’ said O’Brien with a faint smile. ‘You will have read about it in books, no doubt. Not much of it gets to the Outer Party, I am afraid.’"

The Veil: Description of Wine

Type of Satire: Juvenalien: Orwell uses a descriptive and curious tone. Words such as "vast," "dark-red," and "gleamed" develope a descriptive tone while words such as "stuff," "sniff," and curiosity."

Tools: Understatement: Orwell uses understatement to make this excerpt seem less important. One might initially just see a description of wine, however there is more to it. The wine in the bottle can be viewed as a metaphor to communism. On the outside, communism seems like a good idea, however when it is actually put into effect, it does not work. The wine looks great on the outside, but once tasted, is bitter. Additionally, wine is a social drink often associated with romance. Since relationships are shunned by the state, due to the thought that people should be completely devoted to the state, this drink which may open the door for relationships is fairly well erased.

The Target: The target is Communist Russia. Reminders of individual thought and pleasure are removed. Only a select few officials within the higher ranks of society have access to these products.

"‘It will not last,’ said O’Brien. ‘Look me in the eyes. What country is Oceania at war with?’
Winston thought. He knew what was meant by Oceania and that he himself was a citizen of Oceania. He also remembered Eurasia and Eastasia; but who was at war with whom he did not know. In fact he had not been aware that there was any war.
‘I don’t remember.’
‘Oceania is at war with Eastasia. Do you remember that now?’
‘Yes.’
‘Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia. Since the beginning of your life, since the beginning of the Party, since the beginning of history, the war has continued without a break, always the same war. Do you remember that?’
‘Yes.’"

The Veil: Interrogation of Winston

Type of Satire (Tone): Juvenalien- The interrogation of Winston by O'Brien truly starts to show the threatening and hostile tone of Part Three. The reader is finally shown how brutal the Party can be with "traitors" of the state and we are emotionally distraught over Winston's fate. We see O'Brien's aggressive interrogation tactics especially when he continues to question Winston on history of the Party. He is trying to find out the root of Winston's betrayal and wants to expose Winston's throughtcrime. O'Brian persistently questions Winston and begins to show his hostile nature towards rebellious people of the Party.

Tools of Satire used: Reversal and Situational Irony- Reversal is used within the text because O'Brien wants to reverse the questions back around to Winston's root of thoughtcrime. He asks Winston who "we are at war with" but really wants to know who Winston is at war with. O'Brien is trying to get Winston to accidentally admit to his betrayal and wrong-doings during this interrogation. Also, situational irony is used with the word "Oceania." O'Brien says Oceania but really means Winston since he is supposed to be loyal to the country. Both Winston and the reader recognize this but Winston may not necessarily realize that O'Brien is trying to use Winston's own words against him.

The Target: The Target of this text is loyalty to one's country/Party. Similar events like this occurred in Stalin's Russia and Nazi Germany when they used propaganda and interrogation tactics to root out those who were against or did not believe in the same ideals as the government.
<sub>
</sub>

"One did not know what happened inside the Ministry of Love, but it was possible to guess: tortures, drugs, delicate instruments that registered your nervous reactions, gradual wearing-down by sleeplessness and solitude and persistent questioning. Facts, at any rate, could not be kept hidden. They could be tracked down by inquiry, they could be squeezed out of you by torture."

The Veil: Fear of the Ministry of Love

Type of Satire(Tone): Juvenalien- Winston's thoughts on the Ministry of Love create an anxious and diabolic tone within the text. The reader is reminded again of how evil and terrifying the Party/Government is. The text mentions "torture" and "gradual wearing-down" of the people within the Ministry of Love which only adds to the diabolic tone. Winston explains various activities he believes takes place in the Ministry of Love which foreshadows the unlikely fact that he may or may not find his way into that insidious place. He states how anyone's thoughtcrime can be "'squeezed out of you by torture.'" This creates anxiety within the reader and Winston's character because nobody wants to spend time within this horrific ministry.

Tools of Satire: Exaggeration and Dramatic Irony- Dramatic irony is used when Winston explains his thoughts on the Ministry of Love. Foreshadowing is created here since he talks about how terrible the place is and how no one knows what truly goes on in there. The reader is then excited to see what may take place near that terrifying structure. Also, exaggeration is used since Winston has no clue what truly take place inside the Ministry of Love. He is just assuming all of these terrible things happen in there.

The Target: The Target of this text is to explain that controlling government will do anything to keep their power. Stalin would execute or "get rid of" various members in government to keep his power. Presently, North Korea will also have public executions against alleged "traitors" of the state.

"The aims of these three groups are entirely irreconcilable. The aims of the High is to remain where they are. The aim of the Middle is to change places with the High. The aim of the Low, when they have an aim-- for it is an abiding characteristic of the Low that they are too much crushed by drudgery to be more than intermittently conscious of anything outside their daily lives-- is to abolish all distinctions and create a society in which all men shall be equal."

The Veil: Roles of the Three kinds of People

Type of Satire(tone): Juvenalien- The roles that are given to these three groups of people in their society create an unsympathetic and grim tone within the text. This shows the reader that in theses groups define who a person is in their society and that if you're apart of one of those groups of people you are expected to be a certain way. The passage also highlights how the "Low" group is looked down upon by the other groups.

Tools of Satire : Exaggeration and - Exaggeration i used because they take stereotypes of what each person in their specific social group is like or what their goal is. In reality they might not all do the same things or have the same goals.

The Target: The target of this passage is to explain what each of the three groups of people their society has is meant to do. A thing that astonished him about her was the coarseness of her language. Party members were suppose to not swear, and Winston himself very seldom did swear, aloud, at any rate. Julia ,however, seemed unable to mention the Party, and especially the Inner Party, without using the kind of words you chalked up in dripping alleyways. He did not dislike it. It was merely one symptom of her revolt against the Party and all of its ways, and somehow it seemed natural and healthy like the sneeze of a horse that smells bad hay."

The Veil: This shows how Julia is very comfortable with revolting and going against the ideas of the Party. Winston on the other hand is more hesitant t act against the Party even though he knows he is in a safe place.

Type of satire(tone): Juvenalien- Orwell describes Winston as being "uneasy" while he is in a place that he knows is safe. This shows how he has become almost paranoid to the Party no matter where he is.

Tools of Satire: Imagery- Orwell uses imagery to have make the reader imagine the safe place that Winston and Julia are in. It paints a picture of it being one of the safest rooms they can be in to have freedom to think and speak freely although Winston might not feel comfortable enough to do so.

Target: The target of this passage is to show the affect the Party has had on Winston and how he never really feels safe to speak freely or act in a way the Party would not tolerate. It also shows how completely comfortable Julia is with revolting against the Party.
