The king surrendered his power to the french in 1863 becoming a part of the French Indochine. Following the japanese habituation in the second word war they were given independence from france. 
In 1975  Khmer Rouge forces captured Phnom Penh and evacuated all cities and towns. At least 1.5 million Cambodians died from execution, forced hardships, or starvation during the Khmer Rouge regime under Pol Pot.

Since the USA was enemies with Vietnam at the time, the USA did not recognise Vietnam to be in control of Cambodia, so many countries were mislead by this and thought that Cambodia was still ruled by the Khmer Rouge.

There was a civil war in Cambodia as it was being controlled by it's neighbouring country, Vietnam. Natural Factors: Climate and Location: Hot temperatures and a lot of rainfall from May to October and might cause floods. Droughts can also occur from November to April because of the dry season. Rainfall can cause floods which lead to the physical infrastructure needing to be repaired

Cultural Factors: Following the 5 year struggle, Cambodia has quite poor living conditions. The houses are not normally so bad but due to the regular rainfall and droughts, also because of war, it’s hard to keep the house the same way. Disease, there is a 0.6% HIV prevalence rate in cambodia. This can lead to a big amount of money being spent on treating the people with diseases.
