Religion plays a central role in Sudanese life, with Islam being the predominant faith. Islamic practices shape daily routines, social norms, and community life, including prayer, fasting during Ramadan, and religious festivals like Eid. Additionally, traditional beliefs and practices coexist with Islam, influencing cultural rituals and health practices. Understanding these religious practices is crucial for providing culturally sensitive care, as it helps healthcare providers respect patients' spiritual needs and dietary restrictions. Embracing religious practices in patient care fosters trust and improves health outcomes.

Al-Shahi, A. S. , Collins, . Robert O. , Spaulding, . Jay L. , Sikainga, .

In my nursing practice, I will apply Competency 1.1 by responding sensitively to the diverse cultural, religious, and linguistic needs of Sudanese refugees. Understanding that each individual's health beliefs and experiences vary, I avoid making assumptions and adapt my care approach accordingly. For instance, I take into account traditional Sudanese health practices and religious considerations during consultations, ensuring that my care is respectful and inclusive. I also engage with interpreters to overcome language barriers and actively listen to patients' concerns, fostering a supportive environment. This culturally responsive approach promotes trust and enhances the quality of care.

Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice: Working with People from Migrant and Refugee Backgrounds.

In Sudanese culture, Zar is a traditional healing practice deeply rooted in the belief that spirits can cause illness. The ritual, typically led by a healer, involves communal drumming, dancing, and chanting to expel these spirits and restore the individual's health and balance. Zar ceremonies are not just therapeutic but also serve as social and spiritual gatherings, reinforcing community bonds. While Zar holds significant cultural value, it may conflict with modern medical practices. Therefore, understanding and respecting such traditions is crucial for providing culturally sensitive healthcare that bridges traditional beliefs and contemporary medicine.

Mianji, F., & Semnani, Y.
Common health issues that Sudanese refugees may present upon arrival to Australia

Sudanese refugees often present with mental health issues, including PTSD, due to trauma from conflict. The Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide recommends trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as an effective treatment. This approach helps refugees process trauma and build coping skills. The WHO social determinant of health, including access to mental health services, critically impacts refugees' health outcomes. Limited access to culturally sensitive mental health care can exacerbate conditions, while inclusive services promote better recovery and integration. Addressing these determinants is essential for improving health outcomes for Sudanese refugees. Some other health issues include nutritional deficiency ,dental problems and chronic conditions.

Refugee and migrant health. (2022, May 2).
Impact "social inclusion and non-discrimination" can have on Sudanese refugees arriving in Australia

Social inclusion and non-discrimination are vital for the health and well-being of Sudanese refugees in Australia. As identified by the WHO, these social determinants of health directly influence access to healthcare, employment, and social services. Sudanese refugees often face systemic barriers and discrimination, leading to social isolation and poor health outcomes, including mental health issues. Promoting inclusivity and equity in healthcare and community settings helps mitigate these effects, fostering a sense of belonging and improving overall health. Ensuring non-discriminatory practices is essential for the successful integration and well-being of Sudanese refugees.

Refugee and migrant health. (2022, May 2).
