The elective that is all about eating, planting, and cooking with fresh food. This is essentially a garden club. Anyone can participate. We want to create a place that is very relaxed and is fun for everyone who joins whether you are here for the eating, the cooking, or the planting. At our school we get most of our food from different states. The transportation to get this leaves a huge carbon footprint. Frozen food is also non-organic and unhealthy. If we didn't do this it would be cheaper, fresher, and better for the environment. This garden would develop and flourish as time went on. Each season would bring variety in food choices. Records from past students would be kept for new ones. Each person would get to contribute to a changing but everlasting community. We have a courtyard that isn't very well known. We also have an existing garden that isn't well known. Garden club would be a student-run and low-key place to hang out. Success for this elective is continuing this garden and continuing to feed and support out community.

I love this idea! I think it could make a great club too! -- Seve

Good morning Spencer Beuuuuuuuuuuute. Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! If you want to be more fuel efficient, try using one of the following mods of transportation to get to school:
1. Biking-it's one of the most fuel efficient ways to travel, and, it's fun!
2. Walking-want to look nice? Then work those legs!
3. Running-time and pace yourself throughout the year and try and break your previous record. Not only can you do that, but you can challenge your friends!
4. The all electric SRK-this car-motercycle hybrid was, and is, being made right here in Oregon, in fact, right here in Eugene! It's an electric car that's compact, fast, and green.

You may be wondering, "Why is this important?" Well, I'm sure you're all aware of the growing threat that is climate change. Every time you use fuel, you are contributing to his already immense problem, whether you like it or not. If you want to use less fuel, try doing or using one of the ways mentioned before. If you have to drive, try carpooling! You'll get more people to school for less fuel and you get to hang out with your friends! Remember, we all live on this planet, and anything you can do to be more green helps us in the future.

Have a great day Spencer Beutte!

You can participate by getting together with your peers and talking about when and where you can meet up. A lot of parents are scared to let their kids walk alone, but with a group of people, you are sure to be safe. Everyone thinks that they can do nothing about the pollution problem but in reality, if we all commit to a cleaner healthier earth, the world will look different in 100 years or less. Walking will help our earth because one of the main causes of pollution is transportation in cars. Some kids might not want to participate in this, but prizes will be offered to the students who bike the most miles per day. Bike week will take place the third week of school 2017. Our goal is that at least 60% of studentscombined) bike a total of 2,700 miles over the week. This could be achieved if every student biked 2 or more miles a dayIf we accomplish this goal we will have a field day for the students. There will be an assembly on first day of school discussing Bike Week.

Next year at SBMS, we would like students to be encouraged to ride the bus, carpool, and walk to school. These modes of transportation would cut down on some of our local pollution because less cars and other vehicles would be used on an average day. We could work to encourage students to ride the bus and carpool with other kids in their neighborhood. This project would take place over the course of next school year. At the end of each week, teachers would take a tally on how their class got to school. Facts about global warming would be broadcasted on the morning announcements so students would be educated on the issue. At the end of the year, all students would be rewarded with ice cream and a guest speaker who is educated about environmental issues. A successful project would be if everyone able participated and we had a more earth friendly environment at our school.

Every day people can shrink their carbon foot print and it will help (and they should keep doing this) but the bigger problem that needs to be addressed is large companies. For years it's been okay for any one to emit as much carbon into the air as they want, like the sky was jut a giant trash can that we all share, but in recent years we have learned that our trash (in all forms) comes back to us. So, people have been making efforts to shrink that amount of trash, people are helping but companies are not. The amount of carbon people emit is tiny compared to the amount companies emit and though reducing our individual emissions is helpful, reducing emissions from companies will help even more. We all know that most companies don't care about the environment (or the would have tried to fix their ways by now) what they care about is money, so we have to tie money and the environment together. EX an ever lowering carbon emission cap with fines if you go over it.
So, how can our community help make this happen? Some things we can do to help are creating petitions, signing petitions, spreading the word, or being informed. Another thing you can do is donate to or support the California's cap and trade program

We think that if we supply all students that live within 3 miles of the school with a bycicle to get to and from school, we could cut down on greenhouse gas emissions . We should participate in this activity because greenhouse gasses are a growing problem, and even the tiniest cut back could help our atmosphere. This task would be accomplished over a school year long period. It would be accomplished by having more students come to school on bikes, and less cars in the drop off and pick up lane. The bikes would be free, but if damaged, stolen, or lost, the student will have to pay for repairs or replacements. For this we would add in more bike racks to the school for storage. We would do this by using our students' informational handouts to locate their addresses and supply those within 3 miles with a bike and a contract stating that any injury received while riding is not the school's fault, and that any and all damages or loss of the bike must be paid for to the school.

          Riley Darmody and Ian Kurth

For a certain period of time, we would keep track of which students walk and bike to school and how often they do it. When the time period ends, the top five people who walked the farthest and the most often would receive prizes. So tell kids to put on their shoes and helmets. It would take place sometime in the spring of the 2018 school year. Doing this would really help with the pollution problem in our environment and encourage kids to get exercise. All students would have to do is record how far they walked or biked each day, and then they would be eligible for a prize!

There are multiple problems administration has to concor each year but what if they didn't and the students solved it them selves well me idea is that we have a contest each trimester to support good habits like no drugs and drinking or no vandalism ,those are all things we are working on hear at Spencer's butte so the way we will do it is by having a contest to make a poster that supports that trimesters event the winner gets there poster color copied and posted all over the school so that we're evfer and when ever you walk you alway see the good things that you and others should do . The way you are elagable for this contest is that you get a rule sheet at the office then you you create this poster. he updates on the day the poster in due will bbe on the intercom then there will be a one to two week judging enonomuse judging term were the school will judge the posters like we do with spirit week options.
THESE ARE THE RULES:
  1. The poster has To be colorful and eye catching
2. You can't cheat (rip or damage othe r contestemts posters)
3. It has to support that trimesters problem
4.

What- Green class will tally up which grade (by classroom) has the most total recycling by the end of the month. The grade that has the most at the end of the month gets a prize. (Maybe a lunch party)
Why- To encourage students to recycle more!
Why we should care- We should care about recycling because schools go through alot of papers and waste (old food, papers, etc.) and if students at SBMS did something to reduce our wasteful footprint on the earth it could encourage other schools to participate. When you recycle, you are allowing that product to be re used. But when you mindlessly through something away, it goes straight to the dump!
When- Year long-- prizes every month
How- People can successfully participate if green class keeps track of which grade has the most TOTAL recycling throughout the month. We hope that this will lead to SBMS having more recycling than trash.

If our school wins the then grade that walked the most would win a ice cream party. If we can get as many schools possible to participate then this will be a success.

Green Machine Day! By Kathleen DeCosta

Attention all 4J Oregon schools! Students grades 6-12, you are invited to participate in a state wide event at our schools: Green Machine Day! Green Machine Day is a day that occurs once per trimester (teachers chose the days) which is when students & teachers pick up trash in and around the schools!
Why? Some teachers and students may have noticed something about our schools: they aren't as clean as they could be. Well, Green Machine Day helps change that. Green Machine Day will encourage people to clean up after themselves, pick up more trash, help our custodians, and keep our schools clean. Eugene, Oregon is, for example, a very clean green place, but other places in Oregon, like Portland or Salem, aren't as clean. By participting in Green Machine Day you can may a difference and you can help Oregon be the green place it should be.
Teachers and web leaders pass out bags to the students for picking up trash. In 6th period all leaders/teachers will collect the student's trash bags, count the items of trash found, and write them on a chart. Most trash picked up gets first prize.
For each school:
1st place: Giant Bag of your favorite candy, SBMS cap, and title Green Machine!
2nd place: $20 yogurt extreme gift card & title Recycle Pro!
3rd place: $10 any restaurant card and title Tree Saver!
4th place and down: piece of candy (jolly ranchers, warheads, gummybears, or chocolate candy)
If you don't care about cleaning, helping, and keeping things green, ask yourself why. If you ask yourself why, you might discover one of three things:
1. You don't want your hands dirty.
2. You are the one leaving trash on the floor and your guilty about it.
3. You think you can't make a difference.
Well, let me tell you reasons you should help.
1. We have gloves so you don't have to get your hands dirty.
2. You will know where the trash is and be able to pick up more.
3. Every little piece counts.

My idea is that school should have to have a small wind farm of no less than 2 wind power collectors. You should care about this because it will lower taxes and improve the quality of school supplies that the students get. My goal for this is for it to be done by 2021. My plan will take place in the least most un used part of he school property. A success for my plan is that by 2020 75% of schools are using reusable power.

We could even supply the bikes! We should start this out by having an assembly, and sending an email home to the parents, just to be sure everyone knows that this is happening. We can even teach kids to bike in PE.

Let's help students feel more comfortable and prepared for the year ahead! On the first day of school, we should focus on the interactions between students and teachers. For me, it is always hard to really connect with my teachers (and vise-versa) in the classroom setting. Instead, I that we should have that day to just have students talk to their new teachers and really try and get to know each other. Every grade could be in different locations on campus. (For example, eighth grade teachers on the turf, seventh grade teachers in the large gym, and sixth grade teachers in the cafeteria.) then, throughout the time periods, students could just visit their teachers positioned around the area with different stations. Students could spend about 15 minutes with each teacher, which I think would really help students (and teachers) to know their names, their likes and dislikes, and even what the material will be for the following months. I believe students will be more optimistic and relaxed throughout the next few weeks, just by having a short conversation with their new teacher(s). They would spend the morning interacting, then we would have lunch, and teachers could open up their classrooms for students to explore and eat lunch in. The day would begin at the regular school time, and would ideally end at around 12:00. My plan would be that for the first hour and a half, we would have the initiation, and then for the last hour and a half, we would eat lunch and have some free time, meaning that the staff members could open up the gym and provide any equipment, and they could even monitor the turf. This could even help students get to know the staff members. If teachers wanted, they could host an activity in their classrooms. The main goal of this day is to just mainly help students and teachers get to know each other better and build a strong foundation before they interact again later in the classroom.

We live in Oregon where it rains 9 months out of the year. We use hydroelectric power in big bodies of water (they also pollute the water) but in Oregon we don't have a lot of those. The idea is this. Rain comes down and is blown into turbines by fans. The rain hits the turbine on the roof and this makes the turbines spin creating electricity. The fans and turbines are on a roof of a house and the only other thing you need is rain. Anyone can use it, and you can use is anywhere where you have rain. Using this product would mean that we could create energy without using fossil fuels and it doesn't pollute water. Thanks for readin. 🦄🐽🐬🐠🐳🐋🌈🌩🌦⛈❄️✌🏻👌🏻

My idea is to address different school issues every trimester and reward those who participate in the process. For example, first and second trimester would involve walking or biking to school and keeping track in the office who walks or bikes at least a third of the that time. Those who accomplish this are rewarded by a special lunch (possibly even catered if kids paid a small amount) and those who walked or biked half of the trimesters or more would also receive something like a smoothie snack or special dessert. Hopefully this would in courage kids to become more efficient and walk more often. Then, third trimester would address an issue that kids choose for example raising money for a school pantry, or for healthier food options, even for classroom tools we can't quite afford and we would raise money via a fun fundraiser (also chosen by the students) to help our school community to improve and grow over time.
