You can really see that they're wrestling with big ideas and trying to come up with answers. <strong><br></strong><br><strong>What did you learn?<br></strong>As someone who is teaching online now, the baton approach of handing off the conversation is perhaps a no-brainer for keeping the conversation flowing, but for me was a real a-ha moment. <br><br><strong>What questions are emerging for you?<br></strong>I'm curious about how teachers on the ground are actively supporting students' social needs alongside their academic ones.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I am reminded again of how often younger students can be underestimated, especially as we have seen how well spoken and engaged those four students were. It paints an encouraging picture of students as active learners and sends a wonderful message to all of us as we begin this program. I am someone who values socially constructed knowledge and collaborative classrooms, and I'm happy to see scholars who seem to share these values. Beyond this, I think the most important thing the students shared is knowing that it is ok to struggle, and it's ok to not have the answers right away. We should all keep this in mind as we begin!</div>]]></description>

One thing that I know that I will need to be mindful of is the social component of school, and how some students have been missing that factor in their education. It makes me wonder how comfortable students will be interacting with one another in the upcoming school year, whether it is online or in person. I resonated with them saying how online learning had a huge learning curve and it still has its challenges today.  Learners at every age group are having trouble in this time of virtual learning.<br>2.  I learned that it is key to form these connections with students because they can provide a lot of useful input to your teaching and how you navigate the classroom space. <br>3.  I want to know how we can build more of these kinds of projects just in terms of outside the residency. The students had so much to add to this conversation that I think it would be beneficial to have these kind of projects outside the residency. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I really liked Ricardo's point that new teachers (or illuminators) are good for new students (or scholars). Because they're facing similar challenges of getting accustomed to a school culture and its procedures and a new group of people, they can relate well to each other. I wonder how experienced teachers can avoid falling into the assumption that everyone knows the school as well as the teacher does.<br>I also wanted to ask them this, but ran out of time:  Have any of you attended non-charter public schools? How would you compare your experiences in charter vs. non-charter schools? How would you compare in-person vs. virtual learning? </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There were many moments that stood out, however, the point that stood out the most was how both the teacher and students are both learning throughout the process of digital education, as well as they both support each other to make it successful. I learned that the student voice is just as important as the teacher voice in the classroom because they can both learn and guide each other. It was refreshing to see the collaboration of the students and teacher working together toward success; rather than the teacher forcing it on the students. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li><strong>What resonated with you?</strong> I really was captivated with how invested the scholars were. They didn't give generic answers to the questions that you typically expect from middl school students. They really cared about the topic of discussion which is both inspiring and motivating. </li><li><strong>What did you learn? </strong>I'm not sure if this something new that I've learned, but the scholars definitely reinforced how important it is to make connections and build relationships with our students. This is a new process for all of us and we can all really benefit from helping one another. I believe it was Mikila that said it builds trust between the student and teacher when the teacher asks students for help and vice versa. It is so quick to assume as the adult in the room we are supposed to handle things on our own, but we are the new ones in the room, so we should rely on our students to help us through the process just as they rely on us to help them. </li><li><strong>What questions are emerging for you? </strong>How do we make ourselves more available to the students for questions and help? I don't ever want to cut a student off from help. This seemed to be a concern for the scholars. </li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I loved the fact that the scholars were able to give back feedback on what they wanted more support with. I feel a lot of times feedback can be one-sided (teach to students) and it was nice to see how the teachers could improve and continue with what is working. I agree with the scholars that everyone is on a different page and to be patient because learning virtual is new and difficult. I think social-emotional learning is a very important aspect. <br><br></div>]]></description>

I'm not sure I would say that things resonated for me as much as I was just happy to hear about people's experiences with the program and remote learning from different angles (resident, scholars). I'm curious about how remote learning is structured for middle and high school students. I've seen some things about it, but I have no kids/siblings/etc to talk to about it, so it was nice to hear from the students themselves the thoughts they had</div>]]></description>

It's so important to include the scholars in the discussion and its exciting to see how eager they were to join in and that they have advice to help us, themselves and their peers. <br><br>It's interesting that all of them mentioned their letter grades in response to how remote learning was going. I could really see how being in person encourages students to speak with their teachers and advisors and can support that in a way that video may not. How can we create that environment over online classes?</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[The thing that resonated with me the most is the emphasis on making connections. Not only will it help students feel more comfortable when reaching out for help, but it will also allow the teacher to better help the student when they are familiar with them.
I learned that students are making note of the gap in learning within their classrooms and are trying to take more control over it to enhance their education experience. It shows a lot of awareness and aligns with the goals/mission of NYU’s Residency program. 
What is the best way to build those connections with students?
