Drugs act like certain neurotransmitters which bind to and block receptors  Usually, neurotransmitters are supposed to be absorbed or recycled. However, drugs act as neurotransmitters and stay on for a certain amount of time. As a result, the higher levels of dopamine cause the person to feel on a "high" and feel better. This feeling of pressure leads people to have even more drugs and eventually causes an addiction. However, the more drugs are used, the body fights back by decreasing the amount of receptors and natural neurotransmitters which causes the "loneliness" without the drug.
