We Will Rock You is set 300 years in the future where Earth has been renamed Planet Mall and is controlled by the Globalsoft Corporation. It is based on the music by Queen. This corporation has banned all music, except for music generated by a computer. The head of Globalsoft, Killer Queen, knows of a prophecy that someone will lead a rebellion and find the hidden instruments on Planet Mall, and she orders for any rebellion to be destroyed. A youngster, Galileo hears lyrics in his dreams and fulfils the prophecy, and brings music back to the planet.

Denim mood board

I created this mood board to establish an aesthetic for the project based around the fabric I was focussed on. I think that the mood board captured denim as a material and shows aspects of possible denim effects. However, I think it should’ve included more than just the classic blue denim colour, and more decorative and embellishment techniques, as that would align more with the aesthetic of the musical.

Researching the character I was designing for gave me a clear idea of the personality I was designing for. Learning about his rebellious personality and the world he lived in pushed me into a more DIY style waistcoat. This research helped greatly while creating initial designs, influencing the types of construction and decoration I would include.

Venus Lo was very interesting to research for my project, as they used very heavy denim distressing. I felt very inspired by this look and felt it could be reflective of a rebellious character in an apocalyptic world making their own clothes. I also liked the mixture of different colours within the distressing and how it added more dimension.

Dsquared2 is a high end designer, which showed denim as so much more than being casual and how it could be seen as elevated and sexy. This helped influence the shape of my design, including a more fitted waist. The way they embellish the denim and the decorative elements inspired me to add a lot of different decorations, making it look messy but intentional.

Nigel Xavier mainly inspired the patchwork element of my waistcoat. The unique arrangement of his fabrics helped me to make my own patchwork fabric. I found the messy nature reminiscent of the aesthetic I was trying to achieve in my own project.

Studying influencers and the promotion of their brands gave me an understanding effective methods of marketing and promotion. This allowed me to start planning my own promotional video, conveying the aesthetic and features of the waistcoat that I want and that will appeal to an audience.

Used my research to start generating ideas for a garment. I thought about punk and DIY techniques with dramatic shapes to show individuality. I also wanted the characters rebelliousness to be read from the stage through the costume.

I didn’t choose this design as my final design, despite the fact that I liked the slightly unique shape with the dropped shoulder and triangular hem at the back. However I felt that the shape was big or dramatic enough to reflect the character. I also thought the length was slightly awkward and wanted something longer.

I chose this design because the shape is unique and has big, bold shapes. The fitted waist worked with how my client wanted the waistcoat to be feminine, and the large shoulders and wide hips are futuristic and exaggerated.

I took my client’s feedback from the design and changed it to her preferences. I then changed the block pattern and made a toile from calico. The fitting was very useful and let me know how the pattern needed to be adjusted further to improve the fit. I think that having a second fitting with the adjusted toile would have been beneficial in making sure that it fit well.

My making diary shows the process of making the waistcoat. It shows the process but I think it would’ve been more effective if I had more images, as some steps were missed out and supplemented with a written explanation instead.

Experimenting with different methods of distressing and fraying helped to identify the most effective technique. Certain techniques fit the goal aesthetic more than others and would be used on my waistcoat.

I only experimented with 2 methods of created my own fabric from scraps, this did show me that I wanted to use patchwork. However, I think that doing more experiments for this would have been beneficial and I may have added more techniques to my waistcoat.

Experimenting with multiple styles of painting helped me understand how to use the paint on the fabric. I found using thick paint made it look messy and jagged, and thin paint allowed more gradients and shading. I found mixing the two added the most dimension.

Helped me to start thinking of ideas for a video and what its main purpose would be. After thinking of different types of video and potential scenes, I decided on an idea of a marketing ‘reel’ style video.

I received feedback from peers, which told me how they thought I could improve and what they thought I was doing well. This helped me look at my work critically and think about how I could further my work and what I should carry on doing at the same standard.

Meeting my client let me get a feel of her personality and how she wanted to portray the character. I was also able to take her measurements and look at her proportions, influencing how I would design to be flattering on her body.
