Allen argues that the purpose of education is to develop people who can reason critically, communicate across divides, and act as citizens in a democracy – not merely to get a job. When schools prioritize job education, we forget how education and experience promote equity and civic duty. In Allen's mind, civic and vocational should be the two primary objectives of education. In this sense, education should, in addition to growing students into individuals, work to advance a more just and equitable society for all.
