Esther's story and work is rich in detail and texture. As someone who comes from a long line of fiber artists, I understand the hours, days, months and years the work took to conjure. I've wondered if embroidery work like it will be a lost art form one day. Who embroiders today?
As someone who was taught to embroider by her grandmother, I can appreciate how stitch and thread can be coping and healing mechanisms.

I was honored to see this show at the museum a few years ago. I was so moved and transformed by it. Not only does it tell a story of courage and bravery, it shows that there are so many ways to express ourselves today to inspire and connect. As a person who loves handwork, I know the tremendous physical and emotional strength it must have taken to complete such a powerful body of work. The level of emotion that is portrayed here demonstrates the power of memory and the need to share this story of survival.

In so many of Esther's works, we see the loving presence of the natural world. Indeed, many of the trees and flowers seem to be leaning in protectively over Esther & Mania. To my mind comes Wendell Berry's poem "The Peace of Wild Things."

As a stitcher myself, I really appreciate the time and effort that goes into every piece, so to see what would have been both physically and psychologically demanding fibre art is just phenomenal.
