At the end of it all, after everyone runs away, my man Wiglaf stays behind to help out. To me, this exemplifies the fact that even if everyone else isn't a real help, you will always have that one person that stays loyal. Wiglaf is a paragon of how comitatus should be exemplified.

The text reveals that it is the success of comitatus. I say this because all through the book comitatus is very evident. Using the end scene specifically, when Beowulf's son takes his father down to the river and washes his wounds out- that is to me the success of comitatus. I do not think everyone has to live for comitatus to be successful, although Beowulf does die his son is still by his side and loves and cares for him. Also comitatus is shown through Beowulf caring for his land and people and telling his son to care for them. To sum this up comitatus is shown throughout the whole text, it never dies, to me that means it was successful.

The text shows the failure of comitatus because all of the thanes that Beowulf believed to be honorable ran away from the fight to save their own lives. The only person to help him was someone that he was related to so that takes away the idea of comitatus. It kind of makes it seem like if it wasn't his family he would of ran away also.

I think that it reveals both. On one hand 11/12 of the men that he brought ran away from the fight. Which would show failure because they broke their oath to fight with him. On the Other hand Wiglaf stayed to fight with his kinsman. This would show the success because even though it was terrifying, he reminded all of the other men that they made a vow to serve Beowulf, which he carried out.

I think that it shows the failure of comitatus. They say that when the going gets tough, the tough get going-. The meaning is that when times are hard they get to work. However this Epic Poem goes against it because when Beowulf needs them to get going, to help him, he is abandoned.

It reveals both in a sense that they needed each other and the bondage of the army to win wars, but it also shows that just because they are looking out for each other it doesn't always work out in the end. Beowulf still died even though Wiglaf was fighting by his side.

The text reveals the failure of comitatus because in the end, no matter how much Beowulf has done for other people and his vassals, there is only one who actually comes to his aid. Comitatus does not guarantee loyalty, and therefore it has failed. So yeah. Beowulf dies because comitatus fails.

Nicholas Grissinger
The text reveals a success of comitatus because Beowulf's men knew that he wanted to fight the dragon on his own. His men may have been cowards to flee, however they did nothing that would betray their king's command. Although, Wiglaf exemplified comitatus because, even though Beowulf never asked for help, he risked his life to defend his king, even after injuring his hand.

I think the book demonstrates the success comitatus because in all but the last trial, Beowulf's men stood with him, but even in the end there was still one person that stayed by his side. Also, Beowulf gave treasures he received as payment to his king, as well as fought for said king when he was asked to. Beowulf received many gifts of armor from Hrothgar in return for killing Grendel and his mother.
