I think it is to realize that each person is the result of their upbringing by their family, environment, country, province/state/region, city/town/village and culture. It is to realize that even within your own region, they are people with so many different ways of thinking and to realize that putting that on an international scales exponentially increases those ways of thinking.

While keeping the above points in mind, I think it is of the utmost importance to respect each other, each other's culture and each other's way of thinking in order to be a good global citizen.

How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

I think we can achieve this by introducing global problems which are common and which are different with other regions of the world. For example, showing students how global warming affects them in their region directly and how at the same time it affects people in different regions of the world in the same or in different ways. Another example would be showing how people in one region of the world deals with a lot of flooding because of an abundance of precipitations while another region has difficulty growing crops due to lack of precipitations. This shows students how different problems affect different parts of the world and helps them think about how to find solutions for them.

What are the ways in which the texts, topics, or ideas in your classroom have benefited from contributions from other communities, cultures, and nationalities?

I teach in Japan and one example is how the waste disposal and recycling systems differ here from other countries'. Japanese students here are of course used to their system of categorizing waste at the source, which means separating burnable waste, non-burnable waste, cardboard, plastic and other categories directly at home. While in most places in North America, we usually put all the recyclable waste in one container and it then gets separated by other people at a recycling centre. This opened the students' eyes and mine to different ways of doing things in other countries.

Having students do activities or research about how collaboration between scientists of different countries is crucial, especially in the modern era of science. In relation specifically to biology, I think the covid vaccine development made possible by incredible international and collaborative efforts are a perfect example of this concept.

Touching on the previous point, having students research about what scientists from different countries have accomplished throughout history and more importantly, research about how often scientists from different countries collaborate together in order to achieve or discover something. Very rarely do scientists work alone in this modern era. The advancements of the covid vaccine by international efforts were an excellent example we used in our classroom last year. This really seemed to open students' eyes on how important international-mindedness is in science. Collaboration between scientists of different cultures would not be possible without international-mindedness.
