When I designed this banner, I used the principles of balance, proportion, and contiguity. The two vertical images on the left are balanced by the larger camera and text on the right, which keeps the design from feeling too heavy on one side and allows your eyes to flow naturally across the banner. The main title, “Camera Tips,” is bold and large, so it grabs attention first. At the same time, the subtitle, “Mastering the Manual Mode,” is smaller and softer, fitting proportionally under the title without competing for attention. The tall, narrow images on the left also match the scale of the big camera lens on the right, creating harmony. I also applied the contiguity principle by placing the text close to the related images of the camera. This way, viewers can easily connect the words with the visuals, which makes the message more transparent and easier to understand. Balance makes the design feel stable, proportion ensures the proper emphasis, and contiguity ties the text and images together into a clear, unified idea.

I found this exercise to be very interesting. I don't consider myself to be an artistic person. However, I enjoyed creating this banner and using Canva for the first time. I chose not to use a template and start with a blank canvas. I chose to take a minimalist approach by using a standard font with slight shadowing for effect. I also chose the image of unrolled tissue rolls, as this directly applies to the inspection process being taught in my course. I also elected to add a background image behind the font, which is a green circle with a check mark. We utilize a green, yellow, red system for our inspections. The color green is indicative of an inspection being at the target level and is the desired outcome of this course. Also, the check mark is a subconscious reminder to carry out or check off on each element of the inspection. I modified a frame of "torn paper" to create a central dividing line between the two sections. This ragged edge resembles what tissue paper looks like when being torn. I incorporated the design principle of Emphasis by using a large font for the word "tissue" to draw attention and make it a focal point. The next element found in this banner is Balance and Alignment. I tried to balance the banner by using half text area and half image area. I also centered all the text over the background image. The design element of Contrast was used as well. The white tissue rolls against the midnight blue background, providing a layer of contrast. The white text area versus the dark background of the image, as well as the dark color font on the white background, both provide other layers of contrast. Applying the Contiguity Principle was accomplished by coordinating the printed words with the check mark graphic, as opposed to them being separated in different areas of the banner.

In designing this banner, I intentionally aligned text and visuals to follow Mayer’s Contiguity Principle, which emphasizes presenting corresponding words and pictures close together in space and time.

Spatial contiguity: I placed icons that represent soft skills—such as collaboration (two people discussing) and teamwork (handshake)—directly alongside the main course title. This ensures that learners immediately associate the graphics with the central theme of soft skills, rather than having to search across the design to make the connection.

Reduced separation of meaning: Instead of decorative or unrelated images, I used visuals that clearly reinforce the instructional message. This minimizes extraneous processing and makes it easier for learners to integrate words and pictures into a meaningful whole.

Maintaining text focus: The title and subtitle remain the central focal point, while visuals are positioned to support—not compete with—the text. This balance helps keep attention on the key message while still leveraging visuals for reinforcement.

By combining conceptually relevant images with close proximity to the text, the design applies the Contiguity Principle to improve clarity, reduce cognitive load, and strengthen learner understanding of the importance of soft skills.

When designing my banner, I knew I wanted a clean image to tell exactly what the course would be about. I find that when an image is cluttered, it is harder to decipher what you want the audience to pay attention to. I figured with a course banner, students would quickly glance at the image, then move on. So I wanted to focus on the principle of design called emphasis. I created a focal point to draw your eye in; this way, the audience looks at what I want them to look at. The way I did this was by creating a border on vegetables, then putting the title in the middle. The border brings your eye to the subject. Since the title is in the middle, I also gave it a specific design to again communicate exactly what I wanted to say.

I applied the contiguity principle by utilizing temporal contiguity. Since it is a static image, I used it for the flow of information. From top to bottom, I put the most important information first, the title, which supports how viewers process the content in real time.

I enjoyed this assignment. It evoked deep thought as I created my first banner. I logged into Canva and searched for "course banner." Several templates were available, so I chose one appropriate for an LMS course header. I deleted all the elements of the template and started from a blank canvas. I started with the background, choosing the color code for "money green." I then typed the title of my course and chose the Montserrat font which is appropriate for course banners. I began experimenting with text, sizing, and resizing, moving left to right, etc. Next, I searched for images that related to financial stability and real estate investing. After evaluating several images, I selected two that I thought represented the course title. To add contrast, I placed a thin border around to images. I then added the instructor's name. Using the design principle of proximity, I grouped the title, images, and instructor's name to create a visual effect that all of these belong together. I applied the contiguity principle by ensuring the graphics were placed near the text. Lastly, I added two triangles to the flyer and shifted them to create a visual effect.

Finding a template that lined up with my vision proved difficult, so I decided to create my own from a blank template. I looked through many graphics and photos on Canva before I found what I wanted to use. I wanted to create a balanced look, so I used the same picture on top and bottom of my banner, flipping and rotating it to create balance. I used the rule of thirds, using the top and bottom picture and creating a middle section that would have the most pertinent information. I played with colors for the background of the middle section, trying to find a color that would pop and highlight that section. I enlarged the font for the title, to create emphasis and draw the viewer’s attention to it, because it conveyed the most important information. I also used a different color for the font for the title to help it stand out. I intentionally made the instructor’s name smaller and put it to the right, as our eyes tend to read from left to right. I added an outline effect, to the bottom font, to try to create interest. I placed the graphic of an embroidery machine, directly next to the title, to have them contiguous in space and satisfy the contiguity principle.

This assignment was very enjoyable for me. I would consider myself slightly artistic but not an expert for sure. I tend to lean towards soft colors per say, colors that are easy on the eyes such as pastel etc. When designing this banner I did use an already created template but completely redesigned it. The only thing that I didn't change was the color pallet.

In designing my banner, I made sure to apply the Contiguity Principle by adding photos of games to match the "gamification" title. In gamification, the educator can use any type of games, old, new, board games, team games, etc. so I tried to mix it up a little by using different types of games.

To keep it from being overwhelming with photo's and to make sure their was enough "whitespace" I deleted a few of the extra game pieces that I had added before. I wanted to make sure that it wasn't cluttered.

I also focused on "repetition" in my graphic. I kept the fonts, colors and even the transparency of all pictures the same. I believe that repetition of certain items helps with accessibility as well. You can see that my photos are all very similar in design.

When I started looking at this assignment, I was lost on where to begin but after looking through some of the templates in Canva, I started to see some that I liked. I used some design principles to modify a banner that I found visually pleasing to match the colors of my school. The continuity principle talked about the users eye going in a linear direction so I used that principle by having the silver area in the middle of the banner with text and the school logo. I also added art elements on the red sections that was appropriate to the content and faded them into the background to emphasize the main text. Overall, I enjoyed this project as I have not used Canva very much but I found it intuitive to use once I got going.

I enjoyed creating this banner for a training module that would be utilized for developing and retraining college academic advisors. This process started with a blank design in Canva utilizing the design template tool to draw inspiration from similar design. There were three designs that caught my eye with different design elements. I added a draft page pulling elements from each design template, changing the color scheme, and changing the font, graphics, and font placement. Changing the bottom-aligned elements to match the topic of college themes and relations of advisor to student displays the Contiguity Principle of spoken words with corresponding graphics. I also used the consistent color principle of design. Only keeping five base colors in the design maintains a digestible design format for the banner.

I enjoyed creating this banner for my course. As I began to design it, I started off looking for a template to get started, however, I didn't find one that really spoke to the elements I wanted to have on the banner. A blank canvas allowed me to channel my creativeness and design the banner to my liking. I chose a black board background because most colors look more vibrant against darker backgrounds. I decided to use red, blue, yellow, white and green in an effort to keep colors at a minimal. Utlitizing the Contiguity Principle was done by choosing graphics that tie into management such as the clock, calendar, and planning notebook. These graphics emphasis the word managment. I selected the a+ teacher graphic as is what one is considered once achieving effective classroom management. The student with the paper and cheering leans towards student success which is evident if one has effective classroom management. I ensured the words and graphics where close to provide the close spatial proximity one needs to make necessary connections and retain the information presented. Repetition was achieved through the colors and font selected.

Here’s the banner I designed in Canva for my mini course, “Scheduling Accuracy in Healthcare Access.” My design process centered on creating a clean, professional look that highlights both the course topic and its real-world application in healthcare settings.

I started by selecting an image of a professional at a dual-monitor workstation, representative of healthcare access roles. Soft purple and blue backgrounds set a modern, inviting atmosphere, while bold white text ensures the course name stands out at a glance. The placement of monitors, desk details, and geometric design elements was chosen for balance and realism.

For this banner, contrast and hierarchy guided my decisions. The bright white headline against a dark background immediately draws attention to the course title, emphasizing its importance. The subtitle and instructor name are lighter and smaller, following the visual hierarchy to guide viewers from the main information to supporting details.

I placed the course title, subtitle, and scheduling visuals together to help learners instantly grasp the connection between text and imagery. By grouping these related elements closely, the banner reinforces that the scheduling task shown on screen is central to the course content. This approach supports understanding and strengthens the central message.

Balance was achieved by distributing visual weight—placing the figure at the desk to the left and the text block on the right produces a stable composition. Ample white space surrounds the headline and subtitle, making them easy to read without crowding or distraction. These design choices help maintain professionalism and focus in the layout.

By applying these graphic design principles, the banner effectively spotlights the course’s title and purpose, ensures visual clarity, and connects learners with a realistic healthcare scheduling environment

Once I found one that incorporated the main elements I had in mind, I edited it to make it align with my vision, goals, and course topic. I knew that I wanted to have a fun background that was not a solid color, but I also wanted to be able to incorporate individual images that represented my course. I think that the design I ended with incorporated all of those things well!

In my design, I used contrast from the graphic design principles. The background of my banner is a darker blue and black, so I chose to make my text white as well as the border around my images. Also, the images I used were also generally lighter to stand out more against the darker background.

I also made sure to make the font I used for my title clear and easy to read instead of anything that was "fancy" looking since the background is busy. I did not want things to look confusing and jumbled. Since the font is clear, large, and clean compared to the more busy background, it does seem to do a good job of drawing the eye to the title before looking around at the rest of the banner.

I chose to add images that were representative of the topics I would be covering in the course and the topics highlighted in the title. Specifically, I chose an image of an advisor talking with a students, students working on CS/Programming projects, and finally an image of students graduating to relate to student success! Since the images are closely positioned to the title, it is easy to make the connection between the title concepts and the images that are supposed to represent them!

In both versions, the alignment choices give structure to the banner, guiding the learner’s eye naturally from the course title to the instructor’s name.

I also considered contrast when selecting a template. The template I selected included both an image and color choices commonly used when depicting AI and technology related topics. The bold background color paired with the high-contrast text ensures readability and draws attention to the main message.

I applied the Contiguity Principle by grouping all the text elements close to one another and aligning them logically with the design. I was careful in how it overlapped the design. In both versions, the course title and subtitle are placed together, reducing the learner’s need to scan across different parts of the banner.

I started with a Canva template as a base, but I decided to change most of the details to make the design reflect my course. I updated the colors, fonts, text placement, and graphics so that the banner would be more personalized and connect directly with my Early Childhood Education theme. I also added photos of children learning to make it feel warm and relatable.I designed my banner in Canva by using bold colors and playful shapes to create a fun look that connects with early childhood education. I wanted the design to be both inviting and professional.I concentrated on alignment and balance. I applied the Contiguity Principle by grouping related items together. The course title and subtitle are in one clear space, and the instructor details are neatly grouped in another area. This way, learners can quickly identify what information belongs together without confusion.
