Teachers and parents must know their "why" and how it impacts their students' learning journeys. The benefits of changing their instruction and philosophy must outweigh the negative effects of changing their status quo.

Kids Modeling:

One thing that I have started to do this year at our Academic Committee meetings is to have kids model something that is unclear for the community. For example, we get a lot of questions about badging and grading. I had two learners from the elementary explain how it works. This helped to clear up some community confusion in a really positive way.

We use a complex change chart and document to make sure we have all the components. The chart shows if you are missing x component than y will be lacking such as buy-in.

Learning from this group has helped tremendously. Adding flexibility into our schedule, aligning the MCL teams schedules to open up more time together has been a deal breaker. Working on visioning with staff.

Confusion is around others in district not aligned with MCL thinking. Report cards from district. State testing. State standards. Schedule required to have x, y, z from state and district. Not enough time to make the rich lessons. Seeing how it looks.

Currently, we have a cohort of teachers going through an MCL Masters program that meets on-site at our school district. The problem is it is only a small number of teachers.

Another thing we did this year was align our teacher goal setting with the District and MCL vision to show the connection.

Moved into using staff meetings (almost weekly) to build capacity, visioning. Using leadership team meetings (building leadership) which is usually twice a month to build their capacity. To make more deliberate walk throughs related to MCL.

Learning and talking with others to push thinking and reflection. When we have the opportunity to connect practitioners it is very powerful and helps build confidence.

Attending conferences that support practices and structures. For example, attending the brain research conference in Boston really helped our staff understand the “why” we customize our learning and structures the way we do.

We have really focused on writing curriculum with learning progressions imbedded in the curriculum, along with scales, which has helped teachers see the connection.

This year, we also have the high priority standards as the report card for elementary ELA and Math. We provided a FAQ for how teachers can answer questions parents had. This is a baby step, however, we have not had any negative feedback from parents, so I am taking it as a win!
