Schools work because of 2 things: each individual having a 'zone of repulsion' in which each fish stays a certain distance away from their neighbours, and being in coordination with their adjacent fish. This behaviour helps repel predators by making the school look bigger than the predators because there is strength in numbers. It is not yet known how schools form, as well as how large and/or complicated maneuvers happen.
