The primary target learners are adults (and possibly some high school students) who attend Covenant Presbyterian Church (The Barn) in Simsbury, CT (www.cpcbarn.org). Among those likely to choose an online course option, the age range is 20-60, with a somewhat larger cluster at the two ends (20s and 50s) than in the middle (30s and 40s). It may be reasonable to expect that 6-8 students take the course initially, with an indeterminate number taking the course in the future.

Course Purpose

The main purpose of the course is to equip learners to successfully and confidently study the Bible on their own.

Course Format

My tentative plan is to offer the course in a self-paced, fully online format. The reason is that this is a course that the church would like to have readily available any time that someone needs it. Also, by making it self-paced and fully online, it frees up teachers for other courses that require face-to-face or facilitated settings. However, I am considering offering features such as discussion questions to assist small groups who want to go through the course together in a blended format. For example, group members might go through the core materials for a module on their own, then gather together to discuss and apply what they have learned.

The learning time required is a bit fluid because I still need to identify all the course objectives. However, I am aiming for 15 to 24 hours.

There are no content standards that need to be aligned to the course outcomes. Course objectives are yet to be defined.

Credit

The course does not need any professional development, undergraduate, or graduate credit tied to it. In the long term, it may be interesting to consider some sort of badge system for the adult education program at the church.

Platform

There are no particular platform requirements except that it needs to be a free platform, and it should be a platform that will be available into the indefinite future. Another consideration is that at some point we may wish to tie it into the church's website. The leading candidate right now is a Google site, with Canvas as another possibility.

This will be a totally new course. I am investigating an existing face-to-face curriculum our church developed to see if parts could be adapted/redesigned for this course.
