The Great Barrier Reef is very old and and hosts many living organisms. It is mainly composed of new coral growing on old coral that could date back to almost 20 million years ago. Then those corals hardened due to all of the corals building up almost forming a solid rock type reef where it hosts all the following, coral, alage, anemones, sponges, fish, worms, starfish, turtles, molluscs, snakes, crustaceans, and thousands of other animals and plants.

The Great Barrier Reef is actually known as the largest coral reef system with a total of about 2,900 reefs. The Great Barrier Reef is also the world’s biggest single structure made from living corals and other sea creatures. It is composed of many, almost billions of organisms. It was once named one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Great Barrier Reef is so big that if you were in outer space you would still be able to see it. The Great Barrier Reef is roughly the size of Texas.

Threats of the Great Barrier Reef

Although the Great Barrier Reef is so beautiful and big there are many threats facing it in today’s society. Right now, the biggest threat to the Great Barrier Reef is climate change. Whenever the ocean gets warm it tends to put stress on the reefs and eventually bleach the reefs. This has happened only two times in history once in 1998 and again in 2002. In 2002, it was recorded that about 50% of all the corals were bleached. Lastly as stupid as it sounds, a great danger to the reefs is fishing.

The Aboriginals have been using the reefs for a while. It has been recorded that the Aboriginals have been living in the area for about 40,000 years. The area was first spotted though in 1768 by the French, but they ended up not claiming it then. Then on June 11, 1770 an explorer known as James Cook had discovered the reefs.
