Abraham Lincoln was the president of the United States during the Civil War. He believed that secession was illegal, which is why he attempted to bring the South back into the Union. He is often known for being very communicative during the Civil War. For instance, he used the telegraph to send messages to army generals. Eventually, he was assassinated by a Southerner because Lincoln was successful in reintegrating the United States.

Clara Barton is one of the most influential women in American History. During the Civil War, she provided aid to soldiers who were injured during battle. Not only did she help them heal, but she also cooked meals for them. Barton's believe in providing service to humanity led to the birth of the Red Cross. She was motivated by the Red Cross organization in Switzerland. (Source: redcross.org)

Ulysses S. Grant is known for leading the Union army during the Civil War. One of Grant's iconic tactics was to gain control of the Mississippi Valley. By doing so, Grant was able to defeat the Confederate army and call victory on behalf of the United States. Grant later went on to become the president of the United States. He supported Radical Reconstruction in the South. (Source: whitehouse.gov)

The Battle of Fort Sumter occurred on an artificial island in South Carolina. It was the first battle in the Civil War. When Lincoln announced that the fort should be resupplied, Confederate troops went there and seized the fort. This eventually led the Union to surrender Fort Sumter. It remained in Confederate control for approximately four years. (Source: history.com)

Thirteenth Amendment

The Thirteenth Amendment was one of the most, if not the most, important amendments made to the Constitution. It forbade slavery in the United States and U.S. territories. The Thirteenth Amendment can be seen as a part of the Reconstruction because it would forever change Southern society: the traditional culture of owning large plantations was no longer viable. It was one step forward for the progression of rights of African Americans. Unfortunately, even after the Thirteenth Amendment, racism towards African Americans was still profound in American society. (Source: history.com)

Plessy v. Ferguson

The Plessy v. Ferguson case was quite significant in American history. It stated that racial segregation of public areas was legal, as long as the facilities are equal to one another. For instance, a white washroom had to be equal to a colored washroom. It was seen as an aspect of the Reconstruction because it allowed African Americans to finally access education and courts, however, they must use the facilities designated for their race. The case made racial segregation in America more profound. (Source: history.com)
