ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a mental disorder in which symptoms include inattentiveness (unable to keep focus), hyperactivity (excessive movement that is considered inappropriate for the setting), and impulsivity (acts or behavior that occur without thought in the moment). It is one of the most common diagnosed disorders in children, but symptoms can persist long into adulthood. There is no cure for this disorder, only treatment and optional therapies.

https://www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/adhd/what-is-adhd

Usually for children 6 or more symptoms persisting over at least 6 months are required for diagnosis. For adults (17 and up), at least 5 or more are required. The most common symptom is inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with everyday functioning and/or development. Some examples could include difficulty sitting still for long periods of time, trouble with memory, impatience, and fidgeting.

http://adhd-institute.com/assessment-diagnosis/diagnosis/dsm-5/

Many adults and adolescents have been observed using other drugs (including illegal ones) as a means of treatment for their ADHD symptoms. Statistics suggest that if you have ADHD you are twice as likely to develop a co-morbid Substance Use Disorder/addiction. Some of these commonly used to treat ADHD symptoms include:
-Cocaine
-Heroin
-Marijuana
-Alcohol

A number of studies and research have been conducted that seem to show a connection between risk for substance abuse and ADHD. The core symptoms of ADHD, including impulsivity and inattention, may indeed put individuals at risk. In addition they often have problems in school, at home, and with relationships both romantic and platonic. For example, conduct problems such as lying, stealing, and skipping school are more common among children with ADHD and also contribute to the development of substance use.
