At the beginning of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, it is already apparent that tragedy has struck. The title character's father has died. This immediately sends Hamlet in a dark place. To the reader, Hamlet's thoughts and feelings are completely normal, one who is mourning, but to the other characters he's mad. They feel this way, because this isn't happening to them. They don't understand what he's going through. You can't really understand someone's true thoughts and feelings, unless you experience them yourself.
