She likely does this because of her desire to have a friend to confide in. This feeling made the diary extremely special to her, and also the imaginary friend that she wrote to in it, so she mentions Kitty as her dearest because she always wanted this kind of connection with someone.
-Claire Gionet

I find it fascinating that Anne is surrounded by people that truly care for her and love her, yet, she says she has no friends and feels truly alone. I feel like that's really important, especially to those who read her story. You can still have loving family and friends and just be loved, but be so incredibly alone at the same time. I find that very interesting and very human which is really nice to experience with a book (I mean yes obviously it's human she wrote it, it's her diary word for word, but you know what I mean). That also leads to me to how raw her writing is. Reading her diary is so intimate, and sometimes I almost don't feel like I should be reading it because it's her private diary. It makes me feel so human and warm but at the same time there's always that looming sense of dread with apparent anti-Semitism seeping into the seems of her life.

Anne and the others residing in the Secret Annex have good and bad times. Most of the time it's playful, homey, and amiable, however, as we see in some of her entries, they also (from her perspective) treat her rather horribly to the point where she wishes she acted like a completely different person and just wishes to rid themselves of her. I think the way the adults treat her sometimes, telling her she's too loud, she's not modest enough, comparing her to the other kids, degrading her, etc., is awful for her mental state and the way she perceives herself. She's gone from, before going into hiding, a confident, energetic girl who viewed herself as amazing and beautiful to now, not liking herself and just being tired. The constant squabbling and quarrelling of those within the Secret Annex is helping no one, and they're honestly just making it harder for themselves.

One of my questions was how the Nazis knew who was Jewish, since it seemed like the Jews could just not wear the yellow stars that identified them, and deny their religion when asked. However, I learned that the Germans thoroughly researched Jews. According to the World Jewish Congress, Jews were found through "...census records, tax returns, synagogue membership lists, parish records (for converted Jews), routine but mandatory police registration forms, the questioning of relatives, and from information provided by neighbors and municipal officials" (WJC, para. 1). This explained why Anne's family and many others had to hide or escape from the Nazis, rather than live their normal lives as "Christians".

Website used: https://aboutholocaust.org/en/facts/how-did-the-germans-know-who-was-jewish

The Franks' movement to the Secret Annex has brought the relationship Anne has with her mother to light. While living in their house, it appeared that Anne had a normal mother-daughter relationship. That changed after the Franks had to leave their lives behind to hide from the Nazis. These events seem like they could be related, and Mother is treating Anne poorly due to the stress and worry of being found by the Nazis. However, it is evident that Anne's mother still should not be lashing out at her daughter like that, as it is clearly affecting Anne very negatively. Another perspective could be that Anne is just looking at the situation through a cynical viewpoint. The events are being recorded through her diary, so it is obviously going to be biased. Either way, this relationship is definitely worrisome, and hopefully Anne's maturing will help to mend it.

Anne mentions how Mrs. Van Daan will start here rants with "If Anne were my daughter". This gives off a type of controlling attitude of Mrs. Van D. wanting to have Anne act more like how she says that she would act if Anne were her daughter. I think Mrs. Van D. is someone who wants to have younger people brought up in her own vision of what she thinks is something more "sophisticated".

Ever since the Franks moved into hiding, Anne's personality has been revealed more and more every entry. She is obviously very lively, a chatterbox, spunky, and feisty. Anne is a girl that likes to express herself and not be hidden and quiet which is what gives me the idea that she is very vibrant. Many of the people who have been hiding with Anne complained about how much of a chatterbox she was, and she has written about having problems with her excessive talking but that is a habit that cannot be broken. Anne has mentioned her sister, Margot, many times in her diary and she is always talking about how quiet and soft Margot is; from her description of events, Anne is the complete opposite of her sister and enjoys doing things her own way and not being controlled by others. As you can see, Anne likes to be seen and heard, and she would rather do what she wants instead of having others tell her what to do.

If you were to go to pages 87 and 88, Anne talks about some things that she can see about the outside world.
She talks about how the people out there seem to be having much harder lives; poor people that can't help themselves even are being taken from their homes, children and women coming back to their homes to see their family being taken away from them, and it's not just the Jews the Nazis are targeting now. This is likely because although Hitler began by attacking and taking the Jews, he also branched into hurting others that simply weren't like him and his ideals.
When talking about the people, she says that the group she lives with are extremely fortunate to be able to live in a safe shelter and to have a roof over their heads, while people outside are in the rain with thin shirts, not even socks. She also mentions that they are a bit selfish, taking their money and using it for the present, rather than saving it to help after the war, and I think that the events happening around Anne are starting to influence how she sees other people. I can infer that she will likely over time begin to become more compassionate to others around her because of this event.

It is very hard to understand what exactly Anne's relationship with her father is, it seems as if sometimes she thinks he could be her best friend or he is the mean parent. Anne constantly changes the names of what she called her dad, it alternates from Father, to Daddy, or to Pim. Could the reason behind why she calls her father different things is because of the mood she is in? But, Anne is much closer to her dad than her mom because she is always talking about how often her mom scolds her for doing something on almost a daily basis, but when she writes about her dad, she comments on how much of a sweetheart he is and that he only stays mad at her for five minutes. This shows that Anne's relationship with her dad is much more healthy than her relationship with her mom.

During the Holocaust, Jews were treated as criminals by the Nazis, simply because they had different religious beliefs and practices from them. The irony (for lack of a better word) is that the Franks were forced to actually live like criminals because of the rights that were taken away from them. The Franks had to avoid the Anti-Semitic laws and go against their own government in order to survive. This was done when they went into hiding outside of their designated areas, and when they purchased ration cards from the black market. Since I had this idea in mind as I kept reading, I thought it was interesting Anne mentioned that filling the packages with powdered gravy was a chore also done in prison, where criminals are sent to.

Mrs. van Daan is a character that was introduced a little later in the diary. She was first mentioned when she and her husband, Mr. van Daan, moved into hiding with the Franks. From first impression, Mrs. van Daan seemed like a sweet, almost caring-like person who would be good company. But as the book progresses, she is proved to be more of a nuisance to Anne than a friend. In my eyes, Mrs. van Daan is another version of Anne's mother, she gives Anne lectures, or "sermons", about her behavior and the bothersome actions she does throughout the day. Not only does Mrs. van Daan bother Anne, but she annoys all the other residents of the Secret Annex because of her uptight and bossy personality. My prediction, is Mrs. van Daan will soon become close to Anne and would be like one of the friends that Anne has always needed, this character gives the impression that they will make a huge development in character as the book continues.

Every time there was a sound and movement that was heard was, they would assume it was a Nazi. When the Franks first moved in, they had to sew curtains to hand because they feared that they would be found. The van Daans also feared of being found so they moved in a day earlier. And on 20 October, 1942, the carpenter came and made very loud noises and everyone in the annex thought that it was the gestapo. I cannot imagine having to live through such a time and I admire Anne's patience and courage.
