Catching fish is not inherently bad for the ocean, except for when people catch fish faster than stocks can decrease which is something called overfishing.

The number of overfished stocks globally has tripled in half a century

The damage done by overfishing goes beyond the marine environment. Billions of people and animals rely on fish for protein, and fishing is the principal livelihood for millions of people around the world.

Many people illegal fish in places and the more people think its okay and its not doing any harm the more people are going to fish and that means over fishing will become a bigger issue then it is. 

Bycatch had a huge impact on over fishing and made the situation worse. Bycatch is unwanted sea life that are caught while fishing for a different species. Bycatch is one of the biggest issues in the commercial fishing industry. We’ve seen species pushed toward extinction largely due to fishing methods, like the in the case of the vaquita and manatee. Creating more sustainable fishing methods is critical to preserving the species that remain in our oceans.

The marine environment is also impacted greatly by overfishing. Many other species eat fish and with the population of fish decreasing very fast the predators will start to die out as well. When fish species that eat algae and keep coral reefs clean start disappearing, algae grows out of control, destroying coral and species that lived there. 

Overfishing has dramatic consequences for not just the fish populations but also our ecosystems and all life on this plant.

From loss of species due to overfishing and bycatch and threatening algal blooms, our marine ecosystems can easily become imbalanced. This can not only impact the health of the species in that body of water but also become so severe that fisheries have to close down from a lack of fish.

The more the fish population goes down the harder they are going to get to find and the more expensive they are going to get to buy. 

 It can result in a food crisis and loss of employment for some of around 60 million people who work directly and indirectly in the fishing industry. 

A direct consequence of overfishing is that communities relying on fish as a source of protein have less to eat. This leads to malnutrition, especially in children.

Overfishing is a global problem, and it's causing fish populations to decline and harm to ocean ecosystems. As demand for seafood continues to grow, it's critical we avoid, reduce, and stop overfishing.

The saltwater fishing industry in Florida is worth around $9.2 billion annually. The worth of the coral reefs in Florida is $375 billion each year. Overfishing could cost half of this.

Over fishing can cause animals to go extincted. 

It can change the size of fish remaining, as well as how they reproduce and the speed at which they mature. When too many fish are taken out of the ocean it creates an imbalance that can erode the food web and lead to a loss of other important marine life, including vulnerable species like sea  turtles and corals. 

The ocean has been effected so much because of humans and one of the major things is over fishing.

Now we’re facing an imminent and global collapse of our fisheries, projected to happen as early as 2048, thanks to overfishing, wasteful fishing practices. But, there are a few key tried-and-tested solutions to overfishing that have been successfully implemented around the world. The trick is to scale these solutions up to a global scale, encouraging countries that have originally been resistant to helping and get them onboard, and supporting countries that don’t have the means to update their fishing policies themselves.

We can create more marine protected areas-  Currently, less than two percent of the world’s oceans are protected in marine parks; and less than one percent of the oceans are protected from any kind of fishing. More no-catch zones must be established to allow fish populations and their ecosystems to recover and replenish themselves to ensure fishing for future generations.

World Wide Catch shares- Catch shares is a system of fishing management that is proven to allow fish stocks to replenish, while saving the livelihoods of fishing communities by preventing a sudden collapse. A total allowable catch is established, using scientific data about the health of fish stocks and the environment in a certain area, and catch shares are licensed out to each fishing business telling them exactly how much of each seafood species they’re allowed to catch. Using catch shares makes seafood more valuable, meaning a higher, more predictable profit for fishermen, while  protecting the environment.

Stop Trawling -  Trawling drags huge nets through the ocean that scoop up every animal and the ecosystem in its pathway, resulting in massive wasteful bycatch – dead fish are returned to the sea because they weren’t the target fish. We don’t have that kind of sea life to waste. Though there are many programs that focus on decreasing by-catch, and worldwide there are small regions where bottom trawling is banned or limited, these measures aren’t enough. Trawling needs to be banned outright.

What can you do ? 

1. Avoid big fish, which have been overfished for years, like marlin, tuna and shark.

2. Buy local 

3. Go wild, not farmed. Fish farmed in big nets in the ocean pour tons of waste onto the seafood floor, spread disease to wild stocks, and create conflict with local seals, whales, and sharks that are killed when they try to break the nets to eat the fish.

4. Ask your restaurant if the fish is sustainable, and what seafood they have on their menu that is sustainable.

Overfishing will take many years to fix, but it will be worth it when are oceans and marine life aren't being hurt.

A study finds that ending overfishing would stop the population declines of endangered bycatch species about half the time.
