Vermont Legislature On Track To Be First To Legalize Recreational Marijuana

Currently, the legislature of the state of Vermont is motioning to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. If the House of Representatives the bill then Vermont will be the first state to legalize marijuana through the use of legislation. While other states have legalized recreational marijuana such as Washington, Colorado, Oregon and Alaska they did so through voter movement not through legislation. While the state is liberal or more open to progressive ideas this will be a great leap in the process of legalizing marijuana in the United States.
This bill will more specifically impose a 25% tax on the drug and fund drug law enforcement and drug education. Voting on this bill needs to happen prior to the end of May as that is when this session closes. The session closing would end up resulting in and pending bills dying without a vote which would stop the legalization process in its tracks. This legislation if passed would make the drug legal by 2018 for those of 21 years of age or older. The drug will still be legal federally, but this will be a great step in the path of federal legalization.
While this will be a great start for legalization of Marijuana federally it may be harder to influence more conservative states like Texas. Once the bill goes into effect Vermont will be able to also cash in on the millions of dollars in tax revenue that Washington and Colorado are receiving from recreational marijuana. Vermont is the home state of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders who is also pushing for the legalization of recreational Marijuana on a federal level. Essentially, this legislation will be momentous in the fight to legalize Marijuana if it is passed. However, once the bill is to go into effect it will only affect Vermont citizens and law enforcement meaning federal agents can still arrest someone for possession of Marijuana.

Kevin Loria, an author for Business Insider, and activist for the decriminalization of marijuana, goes in detail about the various benefits of using the drug. These vary from treating glaucoma, to decreasing social anxiety. Many of these benefits relate to marijuana being a substitute for other pain medication like opiates. Examples include arthritis, muscle spasms, multiple sclerosis and types of blunt force trauma.
Marijuana contains over 400 natural compounds that can be used medicinally. This means that cannabis can treat specific niche illnesses very well. The most common of these afflictions is epilepsy, which can be completely treated by consuming cannabinoids found in cannabis. Other uncommon illnesses treated using marijuana include PTSD, Parkinson's, Crohn's disease, hepatitis c and lupus.
The article also discusses the ways that cannabis can aid those who do not necessarily need it medicinally. Marijuana boosts ones metabolism, spurs creativity, helps people get off of harder drugs including alcohol and eliminates nightmares. All of this and more provides a scientific basis for the decriminalization and legalization of Cannabis at the federal level.

With Floridians poised to vote this fall on broad legalization of medical marijuana, Gov. Rick Scott on Friday signed a bill that will allow terminally ill patients to have access to marijuana as they try to ease suffering.

The bill, which lawmakers approved this month, was one of 68 measures that Scott signed into law Friday. The bill expands a 2015 law known as the "Right to Try Act" to include medical marijuana. That law allows terminally ill patients to have access to experimental drugs that have not been approved for general use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The bill expands a 2015 law known as the "Right to Try Act" to include medical marijuana.
