Readers, Writers, Texts
1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?
We study literature in order to widen our knowledge of the world, and how/what it may have been like to experience certain things. In modern day, we don't have the ability to simply experience things, but with literature, the author is capable of taking readers into the world they're trying to depict.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
Personally, I feel as though TTTC impacted my outlook towards the world. It brought in the perspective of life in a war where you don't know if you'd experience another tomorrow or today.

3. In what ways is meaning constructed, negotiated, expressed and interpreted in TTTC?
O'Brien's TTTC utilizes various rhetorical choices to create ambiguous images to portray the different emotions he experienced before, during, and after the war.

4. How does the structure of style of TTTC affect its meaning?
Through his own perspective, O'Brien creates the story of TTTC that allows readers to understand and personally experience what the Vietnam War may have been like.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)?

Beloved addresses issues of gender, writing, and power, through the perspective of the characters. Since the novel revolves around the narratives of Sethe, Denver, and Beloved, their perspective provides insight of their situation and their outlook. For Sethe, she was a slave who endured through hardships under relentless slave owners and other slaves. She defies her role as a slave by simultaneously defying her role as a woman. Although her means were extreme, she displayed her feelings through her actions.

How does Persepolis connect to other works we've read? Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.

As Persepolis focuses on the state of Iran during the Iranian Revolution, I feel as though Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried would be a good book in correlation with Persepolis to address a global issue of how an environment of war or an oppressive government can impact society through the explicit use of language and imagery to address such images.

How does Persepolis connect to our world today?

I feel Persepolis connects to our world today as now more than ever we have become more divided. Many individuals struggle with categorizing others based on stereotypes and judgements, and have allowed these ideas to control their impressions and thoughts and opinion of others to control them. With the state of Iran having digressed, I feel as though that it is important to remember to not allow these preconceived beliefs control me.

Much of the story revolves around these two concepts of maintaining these standards in order to be acknowledged within the society.

Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.

Chronicle relates to the other works we've read as it addresses the harms of toxic masculinity upon an individual. This idea is shown through The Things They Carried when people are unable to express their struggles due to having to maintain the societal expectation of being a masculine individual who is incapable of feeling emotions that can contradict the idea of masculinity for a man.

How does Chronicle connect to our world today?

Chronicle connects to our world today as many men still struggle with toxic masculinity. With the typical and conservative perspective of how men are supposed to act within society, many men still struggle with this idea as to how they should present themselves in order to not defy the societal norm of being an abnormal or non-masculine man.

Readers, Writers, Texts
How are we affected by Delbo's memoir and her imperative for us to "Try to look. Try to see"? How were you affected by Auschwitz and After?

We are affected by Delbo's memoir in a way in which her narrative recount of the concentration camp is left unforgotten. To "Try to look. Try to see," we are forced and reminded that we must look beyond and understand the situation for ourselves in order to grasp the extensive and importance of certain issues that exist within the world. Personally, I have always understood this idea of Auschwitz and World War II as having been a serious occurrence, but when this idea has been further brought to life from Delbo's authorial choices brought a deeper understanding and appreciation towards those who have suffered through the inhumane tortures of Auschwitz.

Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.

I feel like Auschwitz connects to Tori Morrison's Beloved as both addresses the issue of allowing the existence of repressive/oppressive institutions within society. Through this idea, both Morrison and Delbo captures the existing issues of injustices and inequality within our society,

How does Auschwitz connect to our world today?

Auschwitz connects to our world today as many countries still possess issues regarding equality amongst the people. Not only that, I feel as though acts similar to that of the Jews and the Nazis are still existing within the world but through varying forms that many people are unable to identify/are willing to acknowledge as an unjust issue within society.
