Banned books, according to the American Library Association, are books that have been "challenge[d in] an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group [or physically] remov[ed] of those materials" (ALA). Books are challenged to become banned. These "challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others" (ALA).

Fun Fact! The first book that was ever banned was Thomas Morton's New English Canaan, which was published around 1637, long before the recent censorship laws were ever placed into effect. It was banned due to compassion towards Native Americans and general satire within the book.
