Flossie, Violet's best friend, had died 2 years ago, of influenza and Violet saw blood coming out of her nose and ears. We learn of Violet's older brother, Stephen, but we are curious to find out more. Chloe is in New York as a New Women, she voted, and chooses not to be married. Chloe wants Violet to go to college one day. Finally, they got onto the train. But the conductor came to check the train tickets and told Mrytle that she had to ride in the colored car. They meet Miss Charlotte Rowe and she accompanies Violet from the train station to the hotel where she is staying. When Violet toward the entrance of the hotel, she is told by Miss Rowe that women use a different entrance at the side of the building. They couldn't find anywhere to eat lunch, so they started going to the first drugstore and sat down. The counter boy asked someone to call the po-po, so they left and went to the next drugstore the counter boy said he could let them eat in the alley, but Mr. Martin said "Or I can take my business elsewhere," Then the boy said, "Why don't you take it back up north?" so Mr. Martin and Myrtle left after the 4th drugstore Myrtle finally suggested that they eat behind the drugstore. So they ate egg salad at the back of the drugstore. Myrtle didn't like it there, she thought that her mother wouldn't like it either but she would be happy that Myrtle was in New York. But Myrtle didn't care about the Girl's Training Institute and so would her mother. Then they started to look for a place to sleep, Martin and Myrtle stop at one of the hotels, and the doorman stop him and her so Mr. Martin asked for directions and made it to Dead Horse Alley and finally got somewhere to sleep. Myrtle want them to vote but she didn't want to go back to the Girl's Training Institute and become a maid but she didn't want to stay in Tennessee. Miss. Ready was out delivering something that she sewed she did and to see her daughter, Mr. Martin wanted to go out. So he went to the pharmacy where Chloe and Violet were, they were talking about what happened when Violet was spying. She didn't get much info about what was going on, Miss E. got a lot of "Applesauce" so she told a lot of "Applesauce". Violet and Chloe drive off in the "Hope Chest" and discuss politics. People are switching sides and it is becoming tense. They go to The Capilot and learn that 2 legislators have run away. This is important because they need to vote (they are on the stuff side). Myrtle and Martin are back at the Dead Horse Ally eating some snacks when Martin got arrested and taken away. The suffs need them to vote for the Suan B. Anthony Amendment. In Order to find them, Violet has to drive the Hope Chest (car) and it gets pretty crazy. She does it though1 She finds Mr. Credwell and takes him back, and Mrs. Pollitzer finds Mr. Blotz. Violet can not find Chole, Myrtle, or Mr. Martin the whole time.
