In this example it’s Sara doing this for Kate but if she was doing it for Kate I believe she could act with some type of sympathy for her other daughter Anna.
Fake Love
Fake Love
We chose this theme because we feel, the mother doesn't show real affetion towards Anna, therefore its "Fake Love". As soon as she even feels something is wrong with Kate, she immediantly rushes over to her, ignoring Anna and only using her when needing her.
"..she holds up a hand shushing me, her ear cocked to the open doorway. 'Did you hear that?'
'Hear what?'
'Kate.'
'I didn't hear anything.'
But she doesn''t take my word for it, because when it comes to Kate she doesn't take anybody's word for it."
(P.11)
"This is when I realise that Anna has already left the table, and more importantly, no one noticed."
(P.40)

This theme is connected to real life, because it exemplafies how these situations of neglect and "fake love" can happen in real life too, even when it goes unnoticed, whether it is with family members or friends.
Duty to Family
Duty to Family
1. This theme is about obligations you have to your family, sometimes whether you like them or not.

2. "That ignites my mother. "Well, you know Anna, neither do I in fact, neither does Kate. But it's not something we have a choice about-' The thing is, I do have a choice. Which is exactly why I have the one to do this. My mother stands over me. "You went to a lawyer and made him think this is all about you—and it's not. It's about us. All of us—'" (Picoult #).
*Anna's mother thinks she should sacrifice herself for the family, but how can you really be a full person when you have to worry about everyone but yourself?

3. Frankenstein's creature and how he would have sacrificed a happy life for his creator.

Overbearing/Controlling Mom
Overbearing/Controlling Mom
This theme mainly focuses on how the mother seems to act as if she has full control over everyone and make it seem as if she’s doing this for Kate but with the way she acts and with the things she does it doesn’t seem that way.

“..., “this is precisely my point, and the reason Anna Fitzgerald’s petition has merit. Her own mother isn’t aware of where she is on any given morning; medical decisions regarding Anna are made with the same hapazard---” (Picoult 84)

This quote thoroughly explained on how Alexander was explaining to the judge on how this is one of the reasons Anna had served her mom with healthcare emancipation. While Sara thought Anna was out jogging she was really with Alexander talking to him getting ready to go to court.

I can connect this quote with something I’ve witnessed in real life because it seems as if since Sara isn’t responsible enough with her daughter. I can connect this in real life because a lot of parents in today’s day and age only care about themselves and try to make everyone else see it as they’re caring for someone else. In this example it’s Sara doing this for Kate but if she was doing it for Kate I believe she could act with some type of sympathy for her other daughter Anna. I’m not saying names, keeping it anonymous but I know there is some parents out there today that only seem to open their mouths and demand for something when it’s beneficial for them, and not their child.
