Generation Z

Being a "Gen Z-er" as some would say is a huge part of my identity. Growing up in the 21st century is proving to be tough, facing adversity at every turn. However, being in this age group does not mean automatic failure. My generation has moved mountains in creating change in the world. I grew up with like-minded and progressive people. Generation Z has very similar thoughts on education, government, and civil rights. Being digital natives, we are able to create things and navigate the web. I am very proud to be in a generation of oddly weird but fun people.

Chicana

A chicana is a woman of Mexican decent who lives in the United States. My parents moved to Utah from Mexico nearly 35 years ago. Being a first generation students is difficult, let alone being a chicana. Sometimes in the Hispanic culture, people do not accept chicanos. Being a chicano is my culture, surrounding myself with other chicanos growing up helped me cope, as they could relate to my struggles. For example, not having anyone to help with your math homework, translating, or being poor. But being a chicano is more than that, it is about having heart and soul and love for my native country.

Big Sister

I am the second oldest in my family, with an older brother and younger brother and sister. My siblings and I are very close, and I am grateful everyday that we are. Growing up, our parents were busy working all day everyday, so my siblings and I raised ourselves. Being a big sister meant going to my brother's parent teacher conferences, it meant taking care of my sister when her stomach would hurt, making dinner, and getting everyone to school. It meant loving them like they were my own. Our sibling bond is stronger than anyone could guess, I love them very much.

Tv Connoisseur

Anyone who knows me understands that I love watching television. Everything from mystery to action to romance to comedy, count me in. I could go hours watching, sometimes I like to leave it on in the background and go about my daily life. However, I am not a movie person, I like to get invested in everyone and movies are just too short to establish a relationship. I'm not sure why I have an addiction to tv shows, It could be an escape from reality or just the comfort of living vicariously through these characters' lives. The world will never know.

I grew up as an obese child. In the United States, 18.5% of children are obese. It took me a long time to make a change in my life. Quarantine was actually the start of my health journey. I have lost over 50 pounds and plan to continue. Even though my weight is constantly on my mind, I like to remind myself and others in similar positions that it takes actual changes in your life. It's not just a diet that you keep for a month or two, it's lifestyle changes that you make and keep forever. I also like to remind myself that it takes time to lose weight in a healthy way, so patience is key. Setbacks are inevitable but I heard this piece of advice once and have never forgot it.
"Two steps forward and one step back is still one step forward" -unknown
