Mahatma Ghandi was originally supposed to be a lawyer, and not a social activist. As a young man, Gandhi trained as a lawyer and went to South Africa. There, he campaigned to end the racism directed towards Indians. After he came back to India, he though he would go back to his career as a lawyer but eventually realized he had to free India from the hands of the British. Through peaceful protest, he managed to free India. He lived in poverty and was not rich, far different from the life he would have had as a lawyer.

2) The consequences of not conforming to society are that they are perceived as outcasts and do not interact with the rest of society. They are treated differently and thought of as strange. It is hard to be a nonconformist because you have to actively try to be different. Living in a society forces you to conform, at least a little. His message is that the only worthwhile item you leave to your children is an education. Money, land, and other material possessions are nowhere near as important as the education they receive. Braun claims that education is the “final legacy” and is the only thing that cannot be taken away from a person. An education can be a route to a better life - to be more prosperous and more successful. Money that your parents left you can only take you so far, your education has to provide for the rest of your life.

Ms. Freida Riley’s epigraph tells the reader that someone can give you something to help you - a book, a loan, etc. - but only you can use what they have given you and become what you want to be. If someone gives you a book, it is up to you to figure out what is inside that book and to learn the information. If someone gives you a loan, it is up to you to use it wisely and expand. You have to have the courage to learn. You are the one who can learn the information. A Rocket Boy’s Family

Sonny feels out of place and out of tune with his family and his father. His family is all spread apart, with his father practically living in the mine and his brother hating him. Sonny’s father clearly prefers Jim because of his football prowess, while he seems to think Sonny can never get anywhere real. Sonny’s dad has “never had much time to think about you one way or the other” (Hickam Jr., 43). Sonny’s dad doesn’t care much about Sonny because he hasn’t done anything that Homer finds heroic or manly. Due to this, Sonny never feels at place with his family. Sonny feels the closest connection to his mother instead. This is shown when his mom scolds him for hurting Mr. Blykovski when she exclaims, “ [y]ou used him. Ike and Mary have always had a special liking for you, and you knew it. You should have thought... before you got him involved”(96). While she simply chides him and helps him realize what he did was wrong, his dad closed down his innovation, gave him extremely harsh punishments, and hurt him more in general. Sonny has a much better relationship with his mother.
