Assessment for learning by Alice F

I have chosen to assess the narrated powerpoint titled 'Nightly reading homework: best practices for parents'. I chose this piece for a couple of reasons. First, it appealed to me as I have a child who is starting to read and secondly, it is not a medium I am used to assessing. Therefore, I hope to gain knowledge and understanding in assessing narrated powerpoints so I am less fearful of utilising them as formative assessment in future practice. In choosing a narrated powerpoint I looked at the possible benefits and limitations from setting an assessment in this form. Clear benefits include learning through practice. Students would have to research their chosen subject and convey that knowledge into a powerpoint. This in turn would give them responsibility for their own leaning and allow them to input that learning creatively. Creating the powerpoint would give them experience of trying out various software that could prove useful in their chosen careers. Furthermore allowing them to choose a subject freely or from a selected list allows for diversity and students feel more in control of their learning and interests. This diversity is more likely encourage them to put more effort into their learning. Peer assessment and critique of the completed powerpoints could encourage further learning by highlighting good practice and the sharing of new ideas. Possible negatives could be that students would be require access to the technology to create the narrated powerpoints and a level of understanding on how to create one.

I have formulated a criteria list to assess a narrated powerpoint. These criteria are:

Is the narration clear and at a good pace?

For the most part yes it is very clear. The student has effectively used different voices to separate knowledge and the examples given to demonstrate best practices clearly. There is a couple of quieter parts where the parent is talking to her child that could have benefited from being louder but overall it was very easy to follow.

Has the students included examples to highlight their knowledge?

The student has used a good range of examples to demonstrate they have knowledge on the subject. Each best practice is followed with at least one example of how to apply the best practice in action. Again, I like the use of different voices to demonstrate the examples. This clearly separates the theory and practice examples and keeps the viewer engaged.

Is the graphics and typing clear?

For example are slides easy to read/follow. Good size of font, clear /relevant graphics. Slides not to plain/ distracting?

The student has has shown good design within the powerpoint. Slides are easy to read and follow. Graphics are clear and relevant. I particularly like design of the examples where the words appear as the parent and child speak them and are a different font to the theory given. One critique would be a would prefer the words spoken by the parent and child to be slightly larger. However they are readable as they are.

Have they included good quality and relevant content?

For example have they included references or a resource list?

The content is relevant and appears to be based on effective theories however there no references or resource list included which I would expect in an adult learning environment. This unfortunately means I cannot assess the quality of resources used, resulting in a reduced grade.

Is the powerpoint a good length?

Between 2-5 minutes is ideal.

The powerpoint is slightly over the 5 minutes guidance. However, the time over is negligible and the creator has used clear/concise information and not gone of topic so I would not be tempted to score lower because of this.
