2. The European nations all treated dark skinned people poorly, but each country to different degrees.
3. Imperialist European nations went to war over the right to exploit the native peoples and the land in Africa, Asia, South America, etc.
What are key structures, agents, or discourses?
Structures:
-Social hierarchies based on race, with lighter skinned people at the top
- Capitalism, European nations profit more as they exploit land/people more.
Agents:
Imperial European nations - Belgium, Germany, France, England
Discourses:
- The idea that darker peoples were lesser, so it was ok to discriminate against / under pay and exploit them.
- Similarly, White Man's Burden led to the idea that replacing native culture with white culture is doing them a favor; Europeans have a duty to 'civilize' all others.
- Newer discourse, led here by DuBois about how this treatment is inhumane
- Do colonies deserve sovereignty or can they continue to be ruled by an imperialist mother country abroad?
