Codes and Conventions - Poster

Film Title - I have conformed to the convention of having my films title on the poster, as well as conforming to the convention of it being the largest text on the page. I feel it is important to build a brand identity especially with a less defined genre (thriller).

Actors names - again, I have conformed to the convention of film posters by including the three lead actors on the top of my poster. In other posters the names may be much larger, however my cast is unknown and will not draw in a large audience so their names do not need to be as eye-catching.

Image - I have conformed to the convention of a large image of the film's lead, however usually the image in central on the poster therefore I have challenged this convention by placing the image on the left hand side. I did this as I felt the awards were more appropriate at bringing in an audience for a thriller than an unknown.

Release Date - I feel that this is important to build a buzz around the film, therefore I placed it just under the film's logo itself.

Critical Opinions - as the fans of my genre will largely be film fans, I would expect them to pay attention to film festivals, therefore I have included the festivals seals on the poster. Usually there would be just quotations from critics however I have developed this convention.

Tagline - I have challenged the expectation of having a tagline for my film, as I feel that the house style makes it much more memorable.

Colour scheme - I feel like the colour scheme of red, white and black is very strong, I have conformed to this expectation to make my poster visually appealing.

Information- the main information on this poster is my production company, the awards my film has recieved, my films rrelease date, my films title and the three lead actors. This means I most certinaly conform to the expectations of film posters as without these elements I feel that my film does not already have a recognisable brand. Large franchises such as 'Star Wars' or the Marvel Cinematic Universe can afford minimalist marketing however my film is standalone and yet to be established.

Masthead - I have conformed to the convention of having a large, bold masthead as I feel that my product would not work without it.

Title - the title for my magazine is also large and bold meeting the convention and I have decided to make it the film's title as my actors are unknown.

Pug - used to grab the readers attention, I have conformed to this convention also

Large central image - I have included my lead actor who is an unknown, conforming to the expectation to build a brand identity

Buzzwords - Again, I conformed to this convention to interest my audience.

Eye-catching colour scheme - I feel that conforming to the convention by having a bright colour scheme will really make my magazine stand out.

Smaller images - I have challenged this convention as I want cast and crew names to be more recognisable than images.

House Style - Obviously I have conformed to including a house style, with a bold, recognisable text and colour scheme to make my magazine visually appealing.

Barcode - Again, I have obviously conformed so that my product can be sold.

Issue No. / Release Date - as my magazine features up to date film news my audience need to know the latest issue.

Coverlines - I have conformed to include these also to portray the variety of projects that my magazine covers.

Film Billboard - Codes and Conventions

Film Title - I have developed the convention of a large title by making it nearly as large as the images to establish my film (due to it being standalone).

Actors names - Again, conforming to the conventions and including actors names shows my audience that the cast is unknown which will help establish the genre.

Image - I have developed this convention by including two separate images, to show the films protagonist and antagonist.

Production company logo - in the smaller font towards the bottom, again conforming to the convention.

Colours - suiting the house theme, I have conformed to having a universal house colour scheme to go along with my poster.

Dates of Release - to inform the audience, again I have conformed to this convention.

Direct Address - I have challenged this convention, as I have only included a limited amount of text on the billboard to suit my theme of minimalism.

Tagline - Again, I have challenged this expectation as I feel that my film's title and characters should help create a brand identity rather than the text.

Film Title - again, the largest text on the page, also on the side of the cover so it can be identified on the shelf, I have conformed to this convention.

Images - on the front, back and side of the page, again I have conformed to this convention to show my films protagonist and antagonist.

Reviews - I have included a single critical opinion however I have still conformed to the convention.

Special Features - I feel that my DVD cover would not work without this, and it will interest my audience.

Plot Synopsis - as my film is a thriller, the plot is very important therefore I am aiming to interest my target audience through including it.

Screen Grabs - I have challenged this convention to add an element of mystery to the film.

Director - although not prominent (as I challenged the convention of a large director's name to interest the audience through other methods) I have still included the directors name in the text box.

Production Company Logo - I have challenged this convention by placing it on the front of the cover, as I feel that it suits the style more.

Colour Scheme - Suiting the colour scheme of the marketing, this definitely meets the convention.

The 'DVD' logo - to signify the media type to the audience, this is neccessary so it is only natural that I would include it.
