The benefits of social behavior for living things vary from organism to organism in the animal kingdom. As a whole however, there are many advantages that come along with the vast majority of social behaviors. Certain social behaviors can allow for more organisms to find mates, therefore increasing their population numbers. Similar to the social behavior I explained in this assignment, there are other behaviors that can scare or distract predators away from capturing their prey, which is helpful for the organisms that are being eaten. Last but not least, another benefit of social behaviors that are exhibited by organisms can include group behaviors that allow for the organisms to find food, shelter, or other resources more efficiently.

Over time, this social behavior has become an adaptation for fish through natural selection. Fish that were slower and not as coordinated were the ones that were caught most often when traveling alone. Fish that were close to each other when traveling were less likely to be attacked or eaten. Like humans, there is safety in numbers. Especially in the ocean, where there is a wide variety of predators and organisms that are much larger than the fish, they have a higher chance of escaping their predators. When the fish began to be eaten less often due to their schooling defense mechanism, they were able to trick and confuse their predators. Since the majority of the fish in groups were surviving, this behavior become more and more common over time and it is something that we can commonly see when observing fish and their most notable behaviors. In other words, when fish began to become accustomed to this social behavior as a group, their production rates were higher, leading to an increase their populations.

One notable characteristic of this social behavior exhibited by fish includes the synchronized movements that the fish use to stick together while simultaneously juke their large predators. Another one of the most obvious characteristics is the abundant amount of fish that group together, hence the name of the specified behavior I chose. Last but not least, the rapid movement that the fish make when schooling is an important tactic when trying to survive against predators larger than them.
