Written by Jon Klassin
*Caldecott Honor (2013)
*Published by Candlewick Press October 9, 2012
*I think this book would be appropriate for grades K-3
*Fantasy/Picture Book
*This book is a great book for lower elementary! It is very funny and students really enjoy it. The story is about a little fish that steals a hat that isn't his. He thinks he will get away with it, but the big fish follows and finds him. I think this book really lends itself to strategy work because students infer much more than the text actually says from the illustrations. Students also naturally have many questions about this book. I would use this book to teach questioning the text.

Written by Matt de la Peña
*Caldecott Honor (2016)
*Newbery Medal (2016)
*Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor (2016)
*Published by G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Readers January 8, 2015
*I think this book would be appropriate for grades 1-5
*Realistic Fiction/Picture Book
*This book is about a grandmother and her grandson and their journey on the bus after church each week to Market Street. CJ is introduced to many different people on the bus and along with Grandma, CJ begins to understand the beauty in what he has.
*I think this is a great story to use to monitor comprehension because there are opportunities to to really think about the text and what is happening. Keeping track of new vocabulary, wonderings, confirmations, and connections will help students "talk" to this text.

The author describes the pizza ingredients using similes and metaphors that send a reader's brain to a movie reel to imagine.

Written by Laaren Brown
*Published by Animal Planet March 1, 2016
*I think this book is appropriate for grades K-3
*This book is all about animals that live in a polar habitat. Readers learn about behavior, babies, food, and more. It is full of non fiction text features that also help the reader become an expert on polar animals.
*I think this book would be helpful in teaching students to determine text importance. When presented with so much non fiction text at once, readers might have trouble deciding what is most important and what is "extra."

Written by Steve Breen
*Published by Dial Books March 13, 2008
*I think this book is appropriate for grades 1-4
*This story is about a young girl that enjoys tinkering with broken things and building new inventions. She is not accepted by her peers and wants really badly to show them her talents. She builds a flying machine and on the way to the Air show she rescues people in need.
*I think this book could work to model and teach making connections. We could connect to other books about persistence and determination, make connections to a growth mindset, following our dreams, or doing what is right. We could also make text-to-world connections about people being rescued from an accident.

Written by Jeanette Winter
*Published by Beach Lane Books November 11, 2014
*I think this book is appropriate for grades 2-5
*These stories are about two real, brave children from Pakistan that spoke out and stood up for education and freedom against their government.
*I think this book would be a great book to help students synthesize information. This book challenges and changes thinking for students as they try to understand life in another country/culture, contemplate rights that they enjoy because they are in the USA, and issues that they are passionate about that require bravery and courage.
