The Fourteenth Amendment states that segregation is illegal, however, the idea of "Separate, but equal" was legal and justified. This court case, and essentially Oliver Brown, challenged the Fourteenth Amendment in saying that it was unconstitutional to give children unequal opportunities at success by segregating them and giving white children a better education than African American children.

The Brown vs. Board of Education case was one of the first events of the Civil Rights era. Bringing awareness to legalized segregation, this case sparked the Civil Rights movement and put it into motion. Declaring that “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal,” the Brown v. Board decision helped break the back of state-sponsored segregation.

One of the major leaders in the Brown vs. Board of Education case was Chief Justice Earl Warren. On May 17, 1954, Warren delivered the unanimous ruling in the landmark civil rights case, Brown vs. Board of Education. State-sanctioned segregation of public schools was a violation of the 14th Amendment and was therefore unconstitutional. This historic decision marked the end of the "separate but equal" and served as a catalyst for the expanding civil rights movement during the 1950s.

After the Brown v. Board of Education case, the Supreme Court had to start the Brown II case because the South wasn't enforcing the previous Brown case. The Brown II case ordered the states to integrate their schools "with all deliberate speed." In 1958, the Cooper v. Aaron case, the Supreme Court ruled that the states were constitutionally required to carry out the Court's integration orders.
