Right from the beginning of their relationship with India, the British, who had come as traders and had become rulers and administrators, had influenced the economic and political systems of the country. n the later 18th century Great Britain and France struggled for dominance, partly through proxy Indian rulers but also by direct military intervention. The defeat of the redoubtable Indian ruler Tipoo Sultan in 1799 marginalized the French influence. This was followed by a rapid expansion of British power through the greater part of the Indian subcontinent in the early 19th century. In Indian life it depended on who you are. If you were of the top ranking British then you lived like a king. But if you were an Indian, then you would be one the people in their hierarchy in working. British life would be like living like you ruled everything around you and being an Indian during this time would mean living like a poor person and working all your life
