This is similar to the united states which does the same thing. Their republic was started in 1979 after the country gained independence from the united kingdom. Kiribati's citizens have similar rights to other countries like the usa and uk. They have freedom of expression and conscience and to be themselves. So compared to countries like North Korea, they have a lot more freedom and can live their lives normally and have food to eat.

The last election as of writing this was in 2016. The person elected for the president of Kiribati is Taneti Mamau with 19k votes the other candidate running for president only got 12k votes.

For example, murder will get you sent to prison. Domestic abuse or sexual harassment can get you in jail also. Their are basic driving laws so basically its a pretty civil country and not in anarchy or any chaos as of today.
