West Egg is a symbol of ambition, for this setting portrays the New Money. In other words, West Egg is the place were people who wants to be Old Money recur to. This is shown through the use of surnames in chapter 4. For example, "From West Egg came the Poles and the Mulreadys ..." This meant that this setting was a key place of immigrants, mostly New Money individuals. In other words, it represents the ambition of them, which explain the constrasts between East and West.
"From East Egg, then, came the Chester Beckers and the Leeches and a man named Bunsen whom I knew at Yale"
Here we can see the differences amongst both, those from East Egg have 'traditional' surnames, they belonged to the royalty, whilst those of West Egg had surnames proper of immigrants mostly.

This theme is portrayed principally approached throughout the novel by both characters and setting. Firstly, setting is used to portray the aspirations of the US population during the Roaring 20's, especially referring to foreigners in pursuit of the American Dream "From West Egg came the Poles and the Mulreadys ...". Differently, it portrays through characters both the means used by people of the US for getting wealthier, while it also shows the effects of ambition on these people.

The Great Gatsby shows the
ambition of one man's reach for his "AD," the disappointment of losing this dream and the despair of his
loss. America, 1920, the ambition in people soared; the American people knew that if they tried they could succeed. For example: James Gatz,
"[. . .] the man who gives his name to this book [. . .]" had this ambition in him too. He was a man who fought long and hard to earn his place in the world as Jay Gatsby. He had dreamed of transforming himself from the poor, young man that he was into the wealthy celebrity searching for love that he would soon become. Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay. He earned his
wealth so that they could finally be together.
